PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A goal off a deflection in front of the net by
Sydney Herrington put a finishing touch on a gritty performance from the Dartmouth women's hockey team Saturday afternoon. The Big Green knocked off the Brown Bears on the road, 2-1, to close the 2022-23 season on a high note.
Herrington and
Tiffany Hill both scored in the third period to push the Big Green past the Bears in ECAC Hockey competition. Dartmouth secured a season-series tie with Brown following a strong defensive performance.
The Big Green racked up 22 blocked shots over the course of the afternoon, allowing just 11 shots on goal. Freshman goaltender
Elle Sullivan picked up the win, stopping 10 shots in crucial situations.
"Our team came ready to play. We came out with a lot of jump and played hard-nose hockey for 60 minutes," head coach
Liz Keady Norton said following the win. "It was important for us for it all to come together at the end."
The Big Green jumped out to a strong start, as the puck stayed in Brown's defensive zone for most of the opening period. Dartmouth challenged Kaley Doyle with nine shots on goal, three of which came off the stick of
Kenzie Bachelor.
Dartmouth's defense was stellar through 20 minutes, as the Bears only managed two shots on goal, which were both turned aside by Sullivan. The Big Green won the faceoff battle in the first frame, 9-7, which
Sydney Herrington and
Georgia Kraus each winning three draws each.
Sophie Robinson appeared to break the scoreless tie 3:44 into the second period. After review, it was found that the puck did not cross the goal line and the game remained tied.
Brown began applying pressure in Dartmouth's defensive zone, as the Big Green found themselves in penalty trouble. The special teams unit was forced to kill four minor penalties in the second period and rose to the occasion each time.
Despite the Bears' consistent pressure, Dartmouth limited shots on goal, lightening the load for Sullivan. The Big Green recorded seven blocked shots in the second frame, while allowing just five shots on goal.
The third period opened with a glorious chance for Brown on a blocked shot in front. Sullivan sprawled out to deny the Bears their first goal of the afternoon four minutes into the period.
The Big Green found themselves with a 5-on-3 power play opportunity just over five minutes into the final period. It did not take long for Dartmouth to capitalize, as a slapshot from the point from Powell bounced over to Hill's stick. The junior shot the puck into the open net to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Brown responded to tie the contest, as Ellie Gauvin scored on the power play to give the Bears life 7:25 remaining in regulation.
The Big Green showed their resilience just 58 seconds later, as Herrington deflected a shot from Robinson past Doyle to retake the lead. The senior's second of the season gave Dartmouth the lead as the third period ticked away.
"It's a great way to close this out. It has definitely come full-circle," Herrington said of her game-clinching goal. "I've had an amazing experience here and it hasn't always been easy. To end it on such a high note and with all these great people around me; there's really no words to describe it."
Dartmouth held on to its one-goal lead to secure its fourth ECAC Hockey win of the season, improving to 8-21-0 and 4-18-0 in conference play to close the season. Brown fell to 9-19-1 and 7-15-0 in the conference in its final contests of the year.
