MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — The Dartmouth softball team opened the 2023 season with a pair of games in Madeira Beach, Florida as part of the Spring Games event. The Big Green kicked off a five-game weekend by sweeping their first two games of the year, overcoming the FIU Panthers and UT Martin Skyhawks.
Â
Game One, Dartmouth 3, FIU 2
A late-game rally lifted Dartmouth to a one-run win in its first contest of the 2023 season. A three-run sixth frame proved to be decisive, as the Big Green secured a 3-2 win over the FIU Panthers to open the team's stay in Madeira Beach.
Â
McCarroll struck out six batters en route to her second collegiate victory.
Kate Farren recorded two RBIs, while
Ashley Frantz brought home the game-deciding run to lift Dartmouth to victory.
Â
McCarroll sent the first two FIU batter back to the dugout in the top of the first, striking out the leadoff hitter and forcing a flyout to
Alaana Panu the following at-bat. Ashton Lansdell walked to first and stole second to reach scoring position. Carmen Perez brought Lansdell home on an RBI single to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Big Green were unable to respond in the opening two innings, despite putting runners on base in both frames.
Maria Angelino registered the first hit of the season for Dartmouth, as the senior singled in the bottom of the second.
Â
Lansdell struck again in the top of the third, as the sophomore recorded a single and stole second for the second time of the afternoon. A throwing error on the next at-bat brought Lansdell home to extend FIU's lead to two.
Â
Following a fourth inning in which both squads were unable to record a hit, Dartmouth loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. A walk and error put two runners on, and
Maddie Katona loaded the bases with a bunt single with one out. FIU escaped the inning following a strikeout and a pop fly to close the frame.
Â
The Big Green broke through in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
Mary Beth Cahalan reached first on a fielder's choice and was brought to third following a double from Panu. A pitching change for FIU would not stop the Big Green, as Farren blasted a two-RBI double to tie the contest.
Â
Following a flyout that sent Farren to third, Frantz brought her home on a single to give Dartmouth its first lead of the afternoon. McCarroll sent the last three FIU batters back with a pair of flyouts and a groundout in the top of the seventh to secure a 3-2 victory for the Big Green.
Â
Dartmouth moved to 1-0, while FIU fell to 6-6 on the year.
Â
Game Two, Dartmouth 6, UT Martin 4
A pair of runs in the seventh inning pushed the Big Green past UT Martin in Dartmouth's second game of the afternoon. The Big Green saw six different batters record a combined seven hits, while
Stella Bale and McCarroll each spent time in the circle in a 6-4 victory.
Â
The Skyhawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as a single from Annie Gutierrez brought Kiersten Nixon home to take a 1-0 lead. The Big Green responded, taking on three runs in the top of the third, as
Allie Ohde,
Jenna Brown and
Maddie Katona recorded RBIs to give Dartmouth a two-run lead.
Â
Bale and UT Martin's Brooklynn Linneman kept the bats quiet from the bottom of the second until the bottom of the fourth. In the fourth frame, the Skyhawks brought the game to a 3-3 deadlock, as Kaci Fuller registered a two-RBI double.
Â
Dartmouth jumped back out in front in the top of the fifth, as
Leila Hennessy recorded an RBI bunt single to retake the lead. The Big Green loaded the bases moments later but could not capitalize as the lead would not expand.
Â
UT Martin put the pressure on the Big Green in the bottom of the sixth, as a double from Blume brought in a run to tie the game at four runs each. McCarroll took the circle in relief of Bale and guided Dartmouth out of the inning.
Â
This would not deter the Big Green, however, as Dartmouth responded immediately. Farren picked up a two-RBI single to give Dartmouth a 6-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Skyhawks were unable to rally, as the Big Green defense held strong to secure the win.
Â
Dartmouth improved to 2-0 with its second win in Madeira Beach, while UT Martin fell to 1-6.
