New Haven, Conn. — The Dartmouth softball team suffered a loss to Yale to open an Ivy League series Friday afternoon. The Big Green were unable to solve the Bulldogs' defense in the early stages of the game, and nine runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings gave Yale a 9-0 win.

Yale (17-19, 8-8 Ivy League) overtook Dartmouth for fourth place on the Ivy League standings with Friday's win in New Haven, Connecticut. The Big Green will look to bounce back with a pair of wins tomorrow to close the weekend inside the top half of the conference, as the Ivy League Tournament features the top four Ancient Eight teams.
How it happened:
Cahalan recorded the first hit of the afternoon in the top of the first, as a single through the left side put her aboard with two away. After the Big Green left her stranded, Cahalan made her presence felt on defense in the bottom of the inning. The junior catcher caught Libby Peoples stealing, who was previously 6-6 on the year, to close the first frame.
Â
Yale led off the bottom of the third with a double to put a runner in scoring position for the first time. McCarroll recorded her 100
th-career strikeout on the following at bat, as forced a flyout to put two away. A walk was followed by a two-out triple from Willa Ferrer, which brought in the first two runs of the game.
Â
The Big Green placed two runners on in the top of the fourth with two outs on the board, but a groundout kept Dartmouth from cutting into Yale's lead. An RBI-double gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. A walk pitch moments later brought in a runner from third, and a single on the next at-bat extended Yale's lead to five heading into the fifth.
Â
Izzy Kam entered the game for McCarroll to open the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff walk set Lauren Perren up for a two-run homer to center field to extend Yale's lead to seven. The Big Green forced a pair of groundouts, but another two-RBI home run closed the contest, as Yale secured a 9-0 win in five innings.
Â
Dartmouth suffered a run-rule loss in Ivy League play for the first time since falling in six innings at Cornell on April 20, 2019.
