WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team got off to a strong start on day one of the IRA National Championship on Friday at Lake Mercer, with all four crews advancing in its quest for the grand finals. The Second and Third Varsity Eights advanced to the semifinals directly from their morning heats while the Varsity Eight won its repechage. The Varsity Four finished fifth in the time trials, which was ultimately good enough to qualify for the grand final due to the afternoon racing being suspended then canceled.
"It's a solid team day," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "It's a great result to have three of our crews through to the AB semifinal, and to have the Varsity Four go directly to the finals is a pretty cool thing."
The Varsity Eight began the day by finishing in third place in its heat (with a time of 5:35.772), just over two seconds behind Brown in second. In the afternoon, the Big Green won their repechage by nearly nine seconds, finishing with a time of 6:01.716, ahead of Navy in second (6:10.144). That qualified the crew for Saturday's AB semifinal.
The Second and Third Varsity Eights each advanced directly to the semifinals by finishing second in their respective morning heats. The 2V came in with a time of 5:49.053 while the 3V posted a time of 5:50.329.
The Varsity Four put forth a strong performance in its time trial, placing fifth out of 31 crews with a time of 6:24.501. The afternoon racing was suspended due to the heat index, so it was decided the top six crews from trials would advance directly to Saturday's grand final.Â
Dartmouth's first race on Saturday is the Varsity Eight semifinal at 7:54 a.m.
"I'm looking forward to watching our three eights line up and compete for a spot in the A final," said Allen. "It's really competitive. There are some very good crews in there and the margins are tight, and we're in the thick of that."
