PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Eric Charptenier scored his first collegiate goal midway through the third period, but Brown held on to defeat the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 2-1, on Saturday evening in ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action at the Meehan Auditorium.
Â
The Big Green fall to 4-6-6, 2-3-4 while the Bears improve to 7-10-1, 5-6-0.
Â
"I thought we played our best period of the year in the first," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "We came out really strong after a disappointing effort last night at Yale. Brown answered in the second and we weren't able to maintain our energy."
Â
After Brown scored midway through the third period to take a 2-0 lead, Charpentier tallied his first goal minutes later to bring the Big Green back within one.
Luke Haymes won the faceoff in the offensive zone and the puck went straight to
John Fusco. Fusco then passed it to Charpentier for the one-timer from the point that went past Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher and over the line to cut into the deficit.
The Big Green created numerous chances down the stretch in search of the equalizer.
John Fusco looked to have scored the game-tying goal with just 90 seconds on the clock, but his shot rung off the pipe and Zacher was able to react quickly enough to prevent the puck from going over the line.
Â
The Bears opened the scoring with a power play goal late in the second period.
Cooper Black made the initial save on a shot from Ryan St. Louis, but Alex Pineau followed up on the rebound and found the back of the net to give Brown a 1-0 lead.
Â
Though it was a scoreless opening period, the Big Green controlled most of play as they outshot the Bears, 12-5. Midway through the period, Brown took a penalty for high sticking, and Dartmouth piled on the pressure. The pressure continued after the power play concluded as the Big Green recorded 11 total shots over the next three minutes.
Â
The Big Green held the edge in shots on goal, 37-30.
