HANOVER, N.H. — The 11th-ranked Dartmouth women's squash team dominated No. 18 Bowdoin on Tuesday, beating the Polar Bears 9-0 for an impressive home-opening win. The Big Green lost one total game all afternoon, sweeping eight matches 3-0 with the ninth victory coming via a 3-1 final.
With the victory, Dartmouth improves to 2-2 while Bowdoin falls to 2-1.
"One of the things we spoke about was this being the first match of the new year, it was important for us to send a message," said
Vikram Malhotra, Douglas A. Donahue Jr. 1973 Head Coach of Men's and Women's Squash. "We spoke a lot about not just coming here and beating a team that we're supposed to beat, but also really sending a message and making sure we structure our season in a positive way moving forward. We have two big matches coming up later in the week, and I think a match like this gives us a lot of momentum."
Among Dartmouth's 3-0 victories was first years
Nathalie Taylor at No. 7 and
Zayna Usman at No. 8, who each allowed just seven total points. Taylor won 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 while Usman was victorious 11-3, 11-1, 11-3. Five others allowed 15 total points or fewer.
At the No. 2 position, first year
Ellie Clifford bounced back nicely after dropping the second game, to win the third and fourth via scores of 11-5 and 11-8, respectively.
Sophomore
Maria Clara Ramírez finished the day at No. 1 with a dominant 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 victory.
The Big Green return to action this weekend, traveling to Amherst on Saturday before hosting Tufts on Sunday.
"We're taking it one match at a time and this being the first match [in 2024], it was a good test for where we are and where we've come back post winter break," said Malhotra. "I'm really happy with the intensity the team brought today and the amount of positive squash that they played out there."
