TROY, N.Y. – The women's hockey team continued their stretch of road games to start the season Friday, traveling to RPI to open ECAC Hockey play.
The Big Green went down in the first period and despite getting on the board late, fell to the RPI Engineers, 3-1.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-3 to start the season and 0-1 in conference play.
Dartmouth killed off a five-on-three RPI power play about halfway through the first period, keeping the game scoreless. The Engineers were able to find the back of the net once in the first frame, but Head Coach of Women's Ice Hockey Maura Crowell said she liked the way her team played in the first period, despite being down 1-0.
"I thought we played some really good hockey for stretches today, especially in the first period. I thought we were controlling play really well," Crowell said.
The second period saw the Big Green record ten shots on goal while only allowing four RPI shots to find their way to Big Green goaltender Michaela Hesová. While they had 19-16 shots on goal advantage, none found the back of the net as the second period ended with the Engineers still leading 1-0.
RPI scored just under a minute and a half into the third period, doubling their lead. This time, the Engineers held the shots on goal advantage, tallying 11 while holding the Big Green to only four.
The Engineers were able to find the back of the net once more in the third period, building a 3-0 lead.
With just over a minute to play in the game, the Big Green found themselves on the power play. They were able to capitalize with nine seconds remaining in the game when the puck found
Kenzie Bachelor off a face off and her shot from the blue line made its way past the Engineers' goalie, marking Bachelor's first of the year and the Big Green's first power play tally.
"It's always nice to score on the power play. That's an area that we work on quite a bit throughout the week," Crowell said about Bachelor's power play goal. "Once you're rewarded with that, you certainly want to continue that because special teams are so important… If we can get both sides of special teams clicking, that's going to give us an even better chance to win some games.
The Big Green have a quick turnaround, returning to the ice Saturday, taking on the Union Garnet Chargers for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
"That's what I love about college hockey is you turn the page on Friday night and you wake up Saturday and you're ready to go and I's an opportunity to get better and get a win," Crowell said.
