HAMILTON, N.Y – Following two weekends of play at Thompson Arena, the Big Green hit the road, travelling to Hamilton, New York to battle the No. 5 Colgate Raiders.
Despite giving up a goal early and coming back to tie, the Raiders pushed hard against the Big Green, ultimately coming away with a 5-1 victory.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in ECAC Hockey play.
The Raiders got on the board early, building a 1-0 lead only 13 seconds into the period. Dartmouth had two power play opportunities in the period but were not able to capitalize until the second one.
Kenzie Bachelor sent a pass to
Izee Powell who ripped the puck across the slot, finding
Lauren Messier who one timed it past the Raiders' goaltender to tie the game at 1.
Colgate got on the board again in the second, taking a 2-1 lead with just over seven and a half minutes in the second frame.
The Big Green and Raiders each had their fair share of power play opportunities throughout the game as each team drew four penalties. The Big Green committed a penalty at the end of the second period, giving the Raiders an opportunity to extend their lead with a minute and 27 seconds of fresh ice in the third period.
While Dartmouth killed off the penalty, Colgate continued to push, drawing two more penalties and scoring three goals in the final 20 minutes to seal the 5-1 victory.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell said she liked the way her team played through the first 40 minutes, keeping themselves in the game but Colgate's push in the third period was too much for the Big Green to withstand.
"We couldn't handle Colgate's push. They came hard after that power play and we weren't ready for it," Crowell said. "We got ourselves out of position a couple times, took two more penalties. They found the back of the net, and then we were just chasing the game from there."
With so many opportunities on the power play and penalty kill Friday, Crowell said her team has to be able to execute and "get ourselves in better positions so we don't take those penalties."
Dartmouth returns to the ice Saturday, facing another nationally ranked opponent, No. 10 Cornell and Crowell said despite Friday's third period not being what they wanted it to be, they have another chance to turn it around.
"This is the nice part about Friday-Saturdays is you don't have a lot of time to dwell on it. You learn from your mistakes, and you get back at it the next day," Crowell said.
Puck drop against the Big Red is scheduled for 3 p.m. You can stream the game internationally on Stretch Internet, nationally on ESPN+, or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
