CAMBRDIGE, Mass.—The Dartmouth men's hockey team opened its season on Friday night at Harvard. The Big Green defeated the Crimson 2-1 to open the season and ECAC play 1-0.
The Big Green opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the first period as Braiden Dorfman picked a corner for the first goal of the season. Harvard looked to breakout of its zone but Cooper Flinton got in a passing lane and deflected a cross ice pass. The puck was picked up by Dorfman just outside the Harvard blue line. He skated in and fired a wrister to the top left corner of the net to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, the Big Green were back on the scoreboard. Matt Fusco fluttered a wrister towards the net from the blue line and Hayden Stavroff got his stick on it. The puck deflected into the top corner of the net to give Dartmouth an early 2-0 lead.
After the opening period, the Big Green led 2-0 as shots were 12 apiece. Dartmouth netminder Roan Clarke turned away all 12 shots in the first period.
The second period saw Harvard score a power play goal at the 11:10 mark to cut the Dartmouth lead in half.
Clarke made 11 saves in the second period to have 23 saves after two periods.
The third period saw Harvard get stopped on all 13 shots as Clarke held the Dartmouth one goal lead. His biggest save of the game came with just over five minutes left on an odd man rush. He made the first save but the rebound kicked out to the slot, Clarke flew back towards the middle of the net to get his shoulder on the puck and deflect it away.
Despite pulling their goalie with just under 90 seconds remaining the Crimson failed to solve Clarke to tie the game.
Clarke finished the game with 37 saves to pick up his career win.
Stavroff's goal was the first of his NCAA career in his first NCAA game. Along with Stavroff, Hank Cleaves, Jack Silverberg, and Tim Busconi all made their NCAA debuts.
Captain Sean Chisholm was the top faceoff man for the Big Green as he won 14 of 26 draws. As a team, Dartmouth won 29 faceoffs.
The Big Green came up big with 13 blocked shots with Trym Løkkeberg leading the way with three blocks.
The Dartmouth win marks the first time since the 2018-19 season that the Big Green have defeated Harvard. It's the first win in Cambridge since the 2017-18 ECAC Tournament.
Dartmouth has a day off before hosting Stonehill on Sunday, Nov. 3. Following the game against Stonehill, Dartmouth is hosting a skate for all fans. Faceoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Thompson Arena, you can buy tickets by clicking here.
