CANTON, N.Y. – Dartmouth Women's Hockey took to the ice for the second straight day Saturday, taking on the No. 11 St. Lawrence Saints ahead of an extended break of games.
The Big Green and Saints played an even first period, but a Saints' power play goal with 14 seconds to play in the period proved to be the game winner, as St. Lawrence went on to beat the Big Green, 2-0.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-14 on the season.
Dartmouth was outshot by the Saints 9-2 in the first period, with each team having a chance on the power play. The Big Green were unable to convert on their opportunity, but St. Lawrence capitalized on its chance, going up 1-0 towards the end of the period.
In the second, Dartmouth was outshot 10-4, but successfully killed of the Saints' second power play attempt. Despite the success on special teams in the period, St. Lawrence found an even strength goal just over 12 minutes in to double their lead.
The third period saw more offensive opportunities for the Big Green as they recorded eight shots on net, double their total from the second period. They also had a power play opportunity, only their second of the game, late in the period, but were unable to convert.
In the final minutes, Dartmouth pulled their goaltender, looking to generate more opportunities. The Saints held strong though, ultimately handing the Big Green the 2-0 loss.
Despite the loss and the "track meet" feel of the game according to Head Coach
Maura Crowell, she liked the way her team played.
"St. Lawrence notoriously plays well here, and they did that tonight, but we were right with them. We held them scoreless in the third. A tight matchup in the second," Crowell said. "I really liked the way we weathered the storm. I think we played a lot of defensive hockey today… and I think we're just getting used to that uncomfortable feeling sometimes of being in your d-zone for long stretches."
Crowell also credited her first-year goaltender Michaela Hesová. Hesová posted 26 saves in net, Saturday.
With the first half of the season concluded and an extended break upcoming for the Big Green, Crowell says her team has the opportunity to reflect and reset.
"We'll be practicing this week and then when they go home, it's a good time for them to reset and reflect but also to stay sharp and continue to keep their foot on the gas in terms of taking care of themselves and getting themselves ready for the next half," Crowell said.
The Big Green will return to game action on December 30 when they travel to New Hampshire for an in-state rivalry. Dartmouth will return to Thompson Arena in 2025, hosting Harvard on January 4.
