CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After wrapping up Day 1 on championship racing in second-place, the Big Green continued their strong performance on the water, finishing the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship in third place.
The weather on the Charles River was near perfect to start the day, but thunderstorms in the early afternoon forced racing to stop and brought difficult winds when sailing was finally able to continue. The Big Green sailed three races in each division prior to the delay, and two races in each division after, posting 236 points in 17 races.
First place finishes in back-to-back A Division races helped the Big Green extend their lead over Boston College to remain in second place, however the Eagles fought back in the 17
th races when they needed it most, sneaking three points ahead of the Big Green to finish second.
While the Big Green finished third overall with 236 points, they put up 97 points in the A Division, the best score of the 18 competitors, granting senior helm
Maddie Hawkins and junior crew
Reese Bragg the win in the A Division. Following the race, Hawkins was also named a National Women's Sailor of the Year Finalist.
Dartmouth will now shift its focus to the Open Fleet Race National Championship, also hosted by Harvard and MIT. The first day of semifinal racing will start Friday morning.
