CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following the conclusion of the Women's Fleet Race National Championship, the Big Green returned to the Charles River to wrap up their season by competing in the Open Fleet Race National Championship.
Â
After holding a large lead to remain in first place for much of the first day of semifinal racing, Dartmouth wrapped up the first day of racing in third place with 136 points, only five points out of first place and two points ahead of fellow Ivy Harvard.
Â
The Big Green fell behind early, collecting a fourth place and seventh place finish in the first round for 11 points. A first-place finish in the A Division propelled them into second place, only one point behind Georgetown. Both the Hoyas and the Big Green earned double digit points in the second B Division race, but the Big Green finished six places ahead to take the lead.
Â
Dartmouth remained in the lead until the ninth round of racing, collecting seven top five finishes from the second round to the ninth, including one first place finish, three second place finishes, and one third, fourth, and fifth-place finishes.
Â
Stanford pulled ahead of Dartmouth by one point in the ninth round of racing, building a six-point lead before the Big Green were able to pull within one point in the tenth B Division race, thanks to a first-place finish.
Â
While the Cardinals and Big Green remained close in points, Boston College made a steady climb over the course of the race to take a five-point lead over Dartmouth, a three-point lead over Stanford, to wrap up the first day of semifinal racing in first place.
Â
The Big Green's 136 total points came from a regatta best 67 in the A Division and a third best 69 points in the B Division.
Â
Dartmouth will return to the water on Saturday to compete in the second day of the Eastern Open National Semifinal. The top nine teams will then qualify for two days of championship sailing in which they will compete head-to-head with the top nine finishers from the Western Semifinal.
