HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green returned to the water this past weekend, looking to continue to build on a successful return to the water in the first weekend of the season.
The sailors finished in the top half of each regatta they sailed in, including a ninth-place finish at the Hatch Brown Trophy, a fourth-place finish at the Regis Trophy, and a fifth-place finish at the Barnett Trophy.
The weekend's best performance though came from
Sarah Young at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship, where she finished third overall with 33 points. Young started the race in the front of the pack, earning the second finishing position and the first finishing position in the first two races.
She collected top five finishes in two of the next three races, sitting in a tie for first through the fifth race with 16 points. She finished tenth and seventh in the final two races, earning her the third-place overall finish, only three points behind the second place Harvard.
Ben Sheppard competed for the Monotype Trophy at the Open Singlehanded Championship. Sheppard posted 115 points, tied with Yale for 17
th overall. He collected two top ten finishing positions of the seven total races.
At the Hatch Brown Trophy, the Big Green posted 104 points in the A Division, 80 points in the B Division, and 83 points in the C Division for 267 total points and the ninth-place finish, directly in the middle of the pack.
The Big Green found themselves as high as third place through three sets of races thanks to first and second finishing positions in the B and C Divisions. They three divisions earned three top five finishes and five top ten finishes over the remaining races to finish the regatta in ninth.
Dartmouth got out to a slow start at the Regis Trophy but jumped over five teams with a first-place finishing position in the second B Division race. They continued to climb with all top ten finishes over the next five races, including a first and second finish to tie for fifth.
They collected a first-place finishing position in the sixth B Division race, a second place finishing position in the seventh B Division race, and a second place finish in the tenth A Division race to jump to fourth place and secure the top five finish.
At the Barnett Trophy, the Big Green posted 42 points in the A Division and 32 points in the B Division for 74 points total and the fifth-place finish. Both divisions finished in the top ten in all 14 races, half of which were in the top five.
The B Division's first place finish in the final race sealed the fifth place finish by one point, beating the Bowdoin Polar Bears.
Dartmouth will sail in three regattas next weekend, travelling to Brown for the Hoyt Trophy and UVM for the Ross Trophy. They will also host the Mrs. Hurst Trophy on Lake Mascoma, the first of two regattas they will host this fall.
