BOSTON, Mass. – The Dartmouth College volleyball team dropped their season opener, 3-1, against Florida Gulf Coast University on Friday afternoon from the Cabot Center in the first game of the Northeastern Tournament.
SET BREAKDOWN:
25-18, FGCU; 25-22, FGCU; 25-15, Dartmouth; 25-19, FGCU
The Big Green fall to 0-1 (0-0 Ivy League) and FGCU improves to 4-1 (0-0 ASUN).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE:
- The opening point was scored by Dartmouth on a kill by Piper Stevens. The next five scores went to the Eagles to take a 5-1 lead.
- FGCU scored an additional four points but a run from Dartmouth evened the score at 9-9.
- Two points from the Big Green, one of which was an ace from Stevens to even the score at 12-12, forced a timeout from FGCU.
- FGCU controlled the rest of the set, taking the first, 25-18.
SET TWO:
- The second set went back and forth early, with four ties until Dartmouth took a two-point lead off consecutive kills from Kauany Gutz, 6-4.
- The set continued to be even, resulting in six more ties, this time FGCU added three consecutive points to take a 16-13 lead.
- The Big Green went on a 5-3 run to shorten the FGCU lead to 22-19 which included a kill and an ace from Stevens.
- The teams alternated scores for the next five until FGCU closed out the set, 25-22.
SET THREE:
- A powerful kill from Maddie LaFata opened the scoring in the third set.
- A clutch block from LaFata forced an FGCU timeout with Dartmouth leading 14-11.
- The next eight points went back and forth between teams until three consecutive blocks from the Big Green gave Dartmouth a 19-14 lead.
- Dartmouth dominated the remainder of the set, winning it 25-15.
SET FOUR:
- The set started competitively with the teams exchanging two-point runs.
- The Eagles opened up a five-point lead, but Dartmouth responded with three unanswered points to cut the FGCU lead back to two, 13-11.
- FGCU regained a 16-12 lead. Dartmouth brought the score to 18-17 before the Eagles had four consecutive scores to once again jump ahead 22-17.
- The Eagles closed out the final set, 25-19 on three unanswered kills.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gutz led the team in kills with 15.
- Stevens and Emma Engstrom both had two aces in the match.
- Raeli Smith had seven blocks for the Big Green.
- Dartmouth recorded seven blocks in the third set.
- This was the first matchup between the two programs.
