HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green took to Thompson Arena for their first of four straight home games Friday, welcoming the Union Garnet Chargers. Goals early in the second and third period were enough to propel the Big Green to victory, defeating the Garnet Chargers 2-1.
With the win, Dartmouth moves to 4-14-1, 2-10-1 in ECAC Hockey play, and 4-0-1 in its last five games.
The Big Green started the first period a little bit slow, not having played in over a week. They found their legs in the second half of the period and even though they had two power play opportunities, went into the second period tied at one.
Just over a minute and a half into the second period, the Big Green took the lead.
Meredith Jensen took a shot from the blue line and
Caroline Appleyard was in the right place, tipping it out and around the Garnet Chargers' goaltender to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
"The lines before us and our line did a really good job of hemming them in the zone and possessing the puck down low," Appleyard said. "[
Meredith Jensen] got it on top, it was a really nice shot, and I was just lucky to get my stick on it."
Later in the period, Union capitalized on its second power play opportunity of the game, tying the score at one goal apiece.
The third period started similarly to the second for the Big Green, but this time it took them only 50 seconds to retake the lead.
Shae Messner helped carry the puck into the zone through traffic and
Cally Dixon fired it home, scoring her third goal in only two games.
"We had a nice chip in, and [
Shae Messner] picked up the puck and just drove it and she really made the play," Dixon said. "I just tried to pull and shoot and use them as a screen and luckily it went in and blocker side."
Not only did the Big Green kill off a penalty in the third, but they also killed off a 6-on-5 advantage late in the period to seal the victory.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell said despite the sluggish start, she was impressed with the way her team responded.
"I really liked our push once we got going and I thought after that, it was a great hockey game, really back and forth," Crowell said. "We had them hemmed in for a while in the second period. A tight one all the way down to the wire."
In Dartmouth's first game against the Garnet Chargers this season, the Big Green were unable to hold onto a 1-0 third period lead. This time, Dixon and Appleyard say what they have learned and implemented in practice contributed to the win.
"We took that loss and learned from it and practiced a lot. I think we worked really hard to finish out games and I think that's been a key point in our practices," Dixon said.
Appleyard echoed, "We're learning how to piece together a full 60-minute game and we're learning that winning is fun and we've been able to carry on some momentum in the past five games and hopefully it carries on for us tomorrow."
While the Big Green will enjoy the victory Friday night, work continues as they welcome the RPI Engineers to Thompson Arena on Saturday.
"Our focus now is making sure we are physically and emotionally ready to go tomorrow," Crowell said. "So, it's awesome to get the Friday night win. We have an opportunity to do that again tomorrow, but it's going to be hard work as always."
Puck drop on Saturday is set for 3 p.m. Following the game, there will be a postgame skate with the Big Green.
