HANOVER, N.H. – On Saturday, Dartmouth women's rugby welcomed the Bowdoin Polar Bears to Brophy Field for a cross-divisional NIRA matchup on Homecoming.
The Big Green scored early and often, cruising to a 105-0 victory over the Polar Bears. With the win, Dartmouth moves to 4-1 on the season.
Because Saturday's game was a cross divisional development game, the Big Green and Polar Bears played three 20-minute periods, as opposed to the traditional two 40-minute halves.
Dartmouth opened the scoring just minutes and 42 seconds into the game, when
Arielle Fotso tallied her first try of the game to give the Big Green a 5-0 lead.
Annie Henrich had a successful first conversion to make it a 7-0 game.
Just over two minutes later,
Marley Larkin broke through the Polar Bears defense for a try. Henrich made the conversion to make it a 14-point game. Henrich carried the Big Green through their next scoring opportunity, scoring seven more points to make it 21-0.
Before the first period would end, Dartmouth would tally two more tries, one from
Katelyn Walker and another from
Katija Crawford who was playing in her first game of the season. Both conversions were successful by Fotso, to give the Big Green a 35-0 lead into the first break.
The Big Green's scoring continued early in the second, as they got on the board just 45 seconds in. First-year
Lauren Cheng got her first of three tries to add another five points to the Big Green total.
Sierra Santiago followed with her first try of the game and Fotso sunk another conversion to make it 47-0.
At exactly the 31
st minute mark, Larkin got back on the scoresheet with her second try of the game, before Henrich tallied another successful conversion. Cheng and Henrich combined for another try and conversion just under seven minutes later to make it a 61-point game.
Santiago kicked off the final period with a try, followed by another Cheng try and Henrich conversion a few minutes later to put the Big Green up 71.
Senior
Maura Hough, playing in her first game of the season, got on the board in the 45
th minute with a try, before Henrich sunk another conversion.
Jenna Sheldon,
Abygail Lambert, and
Taylor Sadek each got their first tries of the season as well to close out the game and put the Big Green over 100 points.
The Big Green had multiple players cross double digit points. Henrich led the way for the Big Green in scoring Saturday, tallying 21 of the Big Green's 105 points. Cheng tallied 15, Fotso 13, and both Larkin 10 and Santiago 10 each.
Head Coach
Katie Dowty said the goal for her team was to control momentum.
"We wanted to come out and really be in control of momentum, work our attack systems, be able to work through phases and manufacture team tries," Dowty said. "It wasn't just individual athleticism today. It was really good rugby that we saw on display."
With the Big Green having only two regular season games left, being able to play some new faces was important for the Big Green.
"This is a perfect opportunity for some of our players that don't get a lot of minutes to show what they can do as we head into the tail end of the season and postseason to show how they can contribute in games like this," Dowty said.
Dartmouth will now shift its focus to Lindenwood, who they play on the road in Missouri next Saturday, and Dowty said momentum is important for her team.
"Keep building off this momentum and keep building our connections, our collective understanding and making decisions together so that we have the continuity and possession that we enjoyed today and then applying that under the kind of pressure that we'll feel against Lindenwood," Dowty said.
Next Saturday's game, October 18, is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. eastern.
