CANTON, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey traveled to North Country this weekend, continuing ECAC Hockey play vs. the St. Lawrence Saints, a team currently receiving votes in the national polls.
The Big Green and Saints played a physical game, going end to end and remaining scoreless into the final period of play. Each team tallied a goal in the third, but the Saints came out victorious in overtime, defeating Dartmouth 2-1.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in ECAC Hockey play.
St. Lawrence started the game hot, doubling Dartmouth's goal total in the first period, tallying 12 to the Big Green's six. Michaela Hesová was strong in net, stopping all shots that came her way.
In the second period, the two teams continued to battle, playing a physical, coast to coast game with limited whistles. With just over five minutes to play in the second period, Dartmouth committed a cross-checking penalty, sending the Saints to the power play. The Big Green's penalty kill continued to be successful, killing off the penalty and keeping the game scoreless.
The Big Green and Saints were nearly even in shots in the second period. St. Lawrence had five while Dartmouth had four, but both goaltenders were up to the task.
Just under six minutes into the third period, St. Lawrence found its way onto the scoresheet, taking a 1-0 lead. The Big Green continued to pressure despite being down one goal. In the final six minutes, Dartmouth's pressure was rewarded, as the Big Green drew a hooking penalty to go on the power play.
Before a minute expired on the penalty, the Big Green were able to find the back of the net.
Cally Dixon retrieved a loose puck, sending it to
Miami Jones at the blue line. The pair traded a few passes before Jones found
Izee Powell at the dot who ripped one past the Saints goaltender for her first of the year, tying the game at one.
Dartmouth continued to pressure into the final minutes, but neither team was able to pull ahead, forcing overtime.
The Big Green and Saints each traded possession and scoring opportunities in the five minute three-on-three overtime period. Dartmouth had multiple chances off the stick of
Ella Inglis, but it was the Saints who were able to find the game winner, scoring on a 2-on-1 with just over a minute to play in the overtime period.
Hesová made three saves in overtime, bringing her total to 28 on Friday.
Despite the loss, Head Coach
Maura Crowell loved the way her team played.
"60 minutes of great hockey. Each period we got a little bit better. I thought our conditioning and fitness showed up in the end," Crowell said. "It was tight. It was physical. It was a really good game. So really like the way we played, the steps that we took, and I like the way we played in overtime."
The Big Green will now shift their focus to the #9 Clarkson Golden Knights who they will face on Saturday.
"I think our team's adjusting to being in more games, not maybe chasing games. I'm just proud of the steps that we're taking," Crowell said. "Getting used to having the puck on our stick, maybe being the one that can turn a game around, put the puck in the net or stop it, whatever it might be. But collectively, I thought we played really well. Good structure which we love, and I thought we made it really difficult on St. Lawrence."
Puck drop on Saturday, November 1 against the No. 9 Clarkson Golden Knights is set for 3 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
