PHILADEPHIA, Pa.—The Dartmouth volleyball team opened the final weekend of the 2025 season on Friday night against Penn. Despite taking the opening set, the Big Green fell in four sets.
Set One (W, 25-22)
The first set saw eight ties and three lead changes as Dartmouth took the set by just three points. The team battled for the first 24 points as the set was tied at 12. Dartmouth took a 15-14 lead into the media timeout as Molly Power notched a kill. The Big Green held onto the lead as Penn called a timeout with the score being 19-17. The battle continued as the Big Green lead fell to just one at 22-21 which led to a Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green took two of three points out of the timeout as Penn called timeout with the score being 24-22 Big Green. A block by Kauany Gutz and Power ended the set.
The Big Green had 15 kills in the opening set with six different players tallying a kill. Dartmouth hit .289 as a team, Gutz hit .273 with five kills while Raeli Smith and Ava Roberts each had three kills. Ellie Mattox had eight assists in the set while Sophia Gagnepain had three. Gutz also had a team high six digs in the set as Zori Brown and Gagnepain each had three digs. Power had three block assists while LaFata had two block assists, and Gutz had one block assist.
Set Two (L, 25-23)
Just like the opening set, the second set had eight ties and three lead changes. The teams split the first 10 points as the score was 5-5. Penn took a 12-7 lead which led to a Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green continued to battle and narrowed it to a two-point deficit which led to a second Dartmouth timeout. The Quakers eventually took the set 25-23.
Brown and Gutz each had three kills to lead the Big Green in the set. LaFata and Smith each had two kills while Gagnepain and Power each had one kill. Both Mattox and Gagnepain had five assists while Gagnepain had two aces and Mattox had one. Fitzgerald and Gutz each had five digs in the set.
Set Three (L, 25-17)
Just like the second set, the two teams split the first 10 points before Penn took an 11-6 lead which forced a Dartmouth timeout. Penn held onto the lead until it was 22-15 which led to the second Dartmouth timeout. Penn took the third set 25-17 to take a 2-1 set lead.
LaFata had a team high three kills in the set while Smith and Brown each had two kills. Gagnepain, Gutz, Power, and Roberts each had one kill for the Big Green. Gutz led Dartmouth with nine digs in the set while Riley Imamura and Fitzgerald each had four. The Big Green tallied three blocks in the set as Roberts and Smith each had two block assists, Gutz and Power each tallied one block assist.
Set Four (L, 29-27)
The fourth set was the most back and forth set of the match as there were 13 ties and six lead changes. The Big Green held an 11-9 lead after the first 20 points of the set, Penn called a timeout with the Big Green leading. The teams battled until the score was tied at 19 before Dartmouth called timeout when Penn led 21-20. The battle continued past 25 as Penn took a 29-27 set win to win the match.
Gutz had five kills in the set while LaFata had three, Roberts and Power each had two kills in the set while Brown and Smith each had one kill. Mattox led the team with 10 assists while Gagnepain had four. Gutz had 10 digs to lead Dartmouth while Mattox and Gagnepain each had three digs. Gutz, Power, Roberts, and Smith each had two blocks assists as Dartmouth had four blocks in the set.
Gutz finished the match with 14 kills along with a career high 30 digs. LaFata tallied 10 kills while Smith had eight and Brown finished with seven. Dartmouth finished the match with 12 blocks, Power had a team high seven block assists. Roberts, Smith, and Gutz each had five block assists.
The Big Green close out the 2025 season on Saturday even as they take on Princeton at 5 PM.
