MANKATO, Minn. – After a weekend off, Dartmouth women's hockey made the trip to the State of Hockey for a two-game series with the #15 Minnesota State Mavericks. The Big Green got out to a good start in the first period and played a solid second, but three third period goals powered the Mavericks past the Big Green, 5-2.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 2-8-1 overall and 1-3 all time against Minnesota State.
The Big Green and Mavericks played an evenly matched first period. Minnesota State slightly outshot Dartmouth, 9-8, and while the Mavericks had the lone power play opportunity of the period, the game remained scoreless.
"I was really happy with our first period," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said. "We got out there, we created some offense, had nice breakouts. I thought our structure was good. We played as a unit, really good 20 for us."
Crowell said the focus for her team in a scoreless game was to improve their second period play, something that has been a struggle for them in recent weeks. The Big Green outshot Mankato 11-10 in the middle frame, but it was the Mavericks that found the back of the net first.
Miami Jones got her stick tied up in the feet of a Maverick on a partial breakaway, awarding them a penalty shot they were able to convert 7:31 into the period to take a 1-0 lead. Three and a half minutes later, Mankto doubled its lead.
"We were focused on improving our second periods. Those have been tough for us lately and I was happy with our resilience after giving up a couple goals," Crowell said. "The energy on the bench, making sure that we were celebrating things that we want to do well, and I thought that was good. Then we got rewarded."
Shortly after Mankato's second goal, the Big Green pulled themselves within one.
Shae Messner carried the puck into the offensive zone and took a shot at net. The Mavericks' goaltender made the initial save but the loose rebound found its way to
Bridget Pringle who backhanded it into the net to make it a 2-1 game headed into the third period.
The Big Green once again outshot the Mavericks in the third period, 7-5, but it was Mankato who found its offensive footing. The Mavericks scored less than five minutes into the final period to make it a 3-1 game, before scoring two goals 11 seconds apart at the 9:35 and 9:46 mark of the period.
Just over two minutes after Mankato's fifth goal, the Big Green found their way back onto the board.
Sophia Chard carried the puck into the zone before dumping it deep to
Cally Dixon. Dixon shot the puck off the pad and the rebound landed on Jones' stick, who tapped it in for her first goal with the Big Green.
With two and a half minutes to play, Dartmouth and Mankato were each assessed two-minute minors for roughing after the whistle. A successful Big Green challenge also dealt the Mavericks a five-minute contact to the head major penalty and a game misconduct.
Despite the extra attacker in the final minutes, the Big Green were unable to convert, falling to #15 Minnesota State 5-2.
"Overall, a much better game from us than we've had in the past few weeks," Crowell said. "We're happy with the steps we've taken, and we need to clean up some of our mistakes; we'll take a look at that tonight and be better [Saturday.]"
The Big Green are back in action against the Mavericks on Saturday, November 29, wrapping the Minnesota road trip. While Dartmouth has a few adjustments to make, Crowell says nothing is major.
"I don't think it was anything systematic or structural or any major things that need to change tactically," Crowell said. "It's just a couple technical details, and we'll get those things cleaned up."
Puck drop on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET. You can watch the game on Big Ten+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
