Big Green can't overcome strong start by the Red Foxes

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's basketball team fell behind by 11 midway through the first half, but the Big Green battled back to within five at the half, however visiting Marist proved too much as the Red Foxes handed Dartmouth a 75-56 loss on Sunday.
Dartmouth falls to 0-1 while Marist improves to 1-1.
Kareem Thomas impressed in his first-career start for Dartmouth, scoring 20 points which included 11-of-13 shooting from the free throw line. He drew nine of Marist's 22 fouls on the afternoon.
Kareem Thomas is up to 20 points in this one, coming in his first-career start!
The Big Green head to Bryant on Wednesday for an 8:30 p.m. showdown against the Bulldogs.
FIRST HALF:
Marist scored the game's first four points and wouldn't look back.
The Big Green pulled within 7-5 and later 9-7 after a Niko Abusara jumper.
The Red Foxes lead eventually reached 22-11, but Dartmouth immediately answered with five straight points, behind a Mitchell-Day layup and Cameron McNamee 3-pointer off a great pass from Abusara, making the score 22-16 with 9:56 on the clock.
Dartmouth pulled as close as four after a Patrick Tivnan Jr. free throw made it 31-27 then later, three Williams free throws made the score 34-30.
Two Thomas free throws with four seconds left in the half pulled the Big Green within 40-35 after 20 minutes of play.
SECOND HALF:
Marist's lead hovered between five and nine for the first eight minutes of the second half.
Five straight points, capped off by a Rhyjon Blackwell layup, gave Marist a 13-point, 55-42 lead, with 10:18 on the clock.
The Big Green couldn't get back to within single digits the rest of the way.
The Red Foxes scored the game's final five points for the 75-56 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Dartmouth shot 34.7% from the floor (17-of-49), including 15.0% from 3-point range (3-of-20).
The Big Green shot just under 50% (14-of-29) from inside the arc.
Marist finished at 47.0% (31-of-66) and 33.3% from 3-point range (9-of-27).
Sunday was Marist's second game of the season, after a slim 66-62 defeat to reigning NCAA Tournament team Xavier last Monday.
The Big Green held a 36-35 edge in rebounds.
