SARASOTA, Fla. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team opened its spring season this weekend with an impressive showing at the Sarasota 2K. In a regatta featuring crews from around the country, the Big Green had all their boats qualify for the grand finals, with four earning medals.
It was a unique regatta for the Big Green, coming at the end of their training trip in the Sunshine State.
"From the first strokes on the water last Wednesday until now on Saturday racing against a lot of crews who have been on the water over the winter, proud of the effort," said head coach John Graves. "It's a really great starting place for the season."
The regatta featured time trials, followed by heats then finals.
"As a team, we talked about using the 3-race format and using each race to learn," said Graves. "I thought all the crews across the board did a great job. Making the A finals across the board was a highlight."
The Big Green got better over the weekend, which was exactly what Graves was hoping for, The varsity eight lost to North Carolina in the heats before beating the Tar Heels in the grand final. Same was true of the second varsity eight, who lost to Miami in the heat before winning in the grand final.
Varsity Eight with their Medals
The varsity eight finished in second place with a time of 6:29.97, only trailing UCF while ahead of UNC (6:30.58), Michigan State (6:32.55) and Iowa (6:34.18).
Also finishing with silver was the second varsity eight (posting a time of 6:42.56), third varsity eight (who had a time of 7:00.80) and second varsity four (with a time of 7:35.48).
In the end, the Big Green finished second overall in total points, ahead of multiple nationally-ranked teams (such as 18th-ranked Alabama and 19th-ranked North Carolina).
"Finishing second to UCF overall as a team was a really cool accomplishment for the team and a great starting spot," said Graves.
The Big Green return to action next Saturday in Boston to take on Boston University and Northeastern.
