HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead and despite a late Siena comeback, held on for the 16-13 win on Monday at Scully-Fahey Field. The Big Green lead reached as much as 15-5 before the Saints rallied to as close as three, but that's as close as they would come.
With its third straight win, Dartmouth improves to 4-1. Siena falls to 1-3.
"It was a great game," said head coach
Sean Kirwan. "I thought we came out off the jump ready to go, something that was a huge goal of ours on short rest — to make sure we were ready to go from the opening whistle. And I thought we did that. It was great to be able to sub and get guys in, guys who have been practicing really hard for us, then hang on with Siena's flurry at the end and still get the win."
A pair of first-years each tallied their first-career hat tricks in the victory, with
Tyler Juhlin netting three goals and an assist. Monte scored three third-quarter goals in less than four minutes.
Hopper Zappitello and
Colin McGill each finished with two goals and an assist while seven Big Green players had multiple points.
Defensively,
Thomas Goguen led the way with a career-high four caused turnovers to go with four groundballs.
Campbell Florence's three caused turnovers also marked a career high.
Zappitello quickly gave the Big Green a 1-0 advantage just 30 seconds in, marking the second straight game Dartmouth scored in the opening minute. Zappitello added another at the 12:26 mark. Then, goals from
Emmett Paradine,
William Stahl,
Brandon Ventarola and Juhlin made the score 6-0 with 6:38 still left in the first quarter.
Siena scored three of the final four first-quarter goals, but the Big Green still took a 7-3 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, McGill scored twice in just over two minutes to make it 9-3 with 11:12 until halftime. But only one other goal was scored in the stanza, and it came by the Saints.
The Big Green started the third quarter like they did the first, this time scoring five in a row to open a 14-4 advantage. Monte ended the run with a natural hat trick, with his three straight goals coming at 9:05, 8:56 and 5:43. The teams went on to trade goals to give Dartmouth a 15-5 lead after 45 minutes of play.
Siena wound up with an 8-1 advantage on the scoresheet in the fourth, holding a 21-5 edge in shots in that quarter. The Saints won 8-of-10 faceoffs in the stanza, which proved significant. Dartmouth's only goal was scored by
Jack Mulholland, the first of his career, from just behind the midfield line against Siena's 10-man ride.
The Saints pulled within 16-13 with 4:40 still remaining, marking their fourth straight goal in less than two minutes, but they couldn't get any closer.
Final shots were 46-41 in favor of the Saints with the Big Green holding a 47-40 edge in groundballs. Dartmouth was 19-for-23 clearing compared to Siena's 19-for-26. The Saints had 21 turnovers to the Big Green's 16. Siena's Andrew Arcuri finished with 16 saves, compared to 10 for
Mason Morel.
Spencer Reagan enjoyed another strong game, winning 11-of-21 faceoffs with five groundballs, this primarily against Logan Baneck who is the reigning MAAC Rookie and Faceoff Specialist of the Week.
"There are always takeaways in any game that you play," said Kirwan. "We love wins. Wins are gold. For us to come away against a really good Siena team, and come away with a win — our second win in four days — is no easy task. That was our fifth game in 16 days and to be 4-1, we couldn't be more proud of the group that we have."
The Big Green continue their four-game homestand on Saturday when they host Utah at 12 p.m.
