Dartmouth picks up impressive win over Ivy foe

DERBY, Conn. — After breaking a more than 10-year drought against Yale last season, the Dartmouth men's lightweight rowing team made it two straight Durand Cups on Saturday as the Big Green varsity eight defeated the Bulldogs to take the trophy back to Hanover. Dartmouth's 1V finished with a time of 5:48.09, more than seven seconds ahead of Yale (5:55.13).

"After a good week of practice, the D150s had a great day of racing," said Big Green head coach Trevor Michelson. "In the varsity, a punishing base speed powered us to an open water victory against a formidable Yale crew, retaining the Durand Cup in the process. I'm excited about their progress, and am looking forward to another great week of practice before a very tough trip to Ithaca to race the Big Red from Cornell."

The second varsity eight began the morning with a slim defeat. Dartmouth's time of 5:59.62 was less than four seconds behind Yale's 2V (5:56.00).

"Our second boat kicked off the morning with a tightly-contested battle down the course," said Michelson. "This was the second weekend in a row of a solid piece from the second eight, and I feel like this crew is right on the cusp of greatness."

The 3V was also extremely competitive, posting a time of 6:30.99, just over 13 seconds behind Yale (6:17.96).

"It was another sign of progress with this young developing crew," said Michelson. "Hats off to Hannah Fitts, our volunteer, for her tireless efforts with this boat."

The Big Green hit the road next Saturday for the Baggley Bowl at Cornell.
