CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.—Dartmouth volleyball opened its second tournament of the season on Thursday. The Big Green fell in three sets to Sacramento State in the first match of the weekend.
Set One (L, 25-20)
The Big Green and Hornets traded points early in the set which was followed by a 6-0 run from the Big Green to take a 9-4 lead. Sac St. battled back and tied the set at 14. The teams continued to trade points until the Hornets took a late 22-17 lead, they held on to the lead and won the first set 25-20.
Dartmouth had six kills in the opening set along with six assists. The Big Green had 12 digs to open the match along with three service aces from Julia York. Dartmouth had a pair of blocks to open the match.
Set Two (L, 25-12)
The Big Green notched the first point of the second set as Zori Brown notched a kill from Sophia Gagnepan. The Hornets quickly tied the set at one and then the teams traded a point to make it 2-2. Following the 2-2 tie, Sac State went on a 9-4 run to take an 11-6 lead. After building a lead, the Hornets did not look back and took the second set 25-12.
In the second set, the Big Green totaled seven kills along with one block and one service ace. Both Kauany Gutz and Molly Power had a pair of kills in the set.
Set Three (L, 27-25)
The third set came down to the final points of the set as the two teams battled throughout the set. Dartmouth jumped out to a 10-5 lead after 15 points. Dartmouth led the five point lead through 25 points. The Hornets tied the match at 23 as Dartmouth looked to extend the match. Dartmouth took a 25-24 lead but Sac State took the next three points to take the match.
Dartmouth produced 13 kills in the third set led by Gutz who had four kills in the set. Dartmouth also had a pair of blocks and 18 digs in the third set. Gagnepain had 11 assists in the set along with two digs.
Eight different members of the Big Green had a kill including Gutz with a team high six. Brown, Raeli Smith, Ava Roberts, and Maddie LaFata each had four kills. Gagnepain notched 18 of Dartmouth's 23 assists in the match while she also had six digs. York had three service aces while Gagenpain also tallied an ace.
The Big Green take on the UAlbany Great Danes in the second match of the Boston College Invitational on Friday afternoon. The match is set for a 3 PM first serve in Boston.
