HANOVER, N.H. – Women's hockey returned to Thompson Arena, Saturday, facing the St. Lawrence Saints and looking to avenge an overtime loss to the Saints earlier this season.
St. Lawrence took the lead in the first period before Dartmouth was able to pull even in the second, but the Saints found the game winner in overtime to defeat the Big Green, 2-1.
Saturday's game was dominated by special teams, as both the Big Green and the Saints had five power play opportunities each. Dartmouth got its first two within the first few minutes of the game, going on a 5-on-3 advantage, but were unable to capitalize.
The Saints outshot the Big Green 22-7 in the first period. Michaela Hesová, playing in her final game with the Big Green before heading to Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics, made 21 saves. St. Lawrence found the back of the net just past the halfway mark of the period to give itself a 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth responded in the second period, shutting down the Saints defensively, allowing only four shots on goal while the Big Green tallied 17. St. Lawrence was assessed a five-minute major penalty with just under six minutes to play in the middle frame, giving Dartmouth an opportunity to get on the board.
The Big Green did just that, taking 2:06 to tie the game.
Cally Dixon shot the puck on net and while the Saints goaltender made the initial save, the rebound was loose in the crease.
Hamilton Doster got one swat at it before
Izee Powell was able to push it over the goal line and tie the game at one.
It was Powell's fourth of the season, tying her for the team high as she tallied her second goal in as many games.
St. Lawrence outshot the Big Green in the final regulation period and had two power play opportunities to Dartmouth's one, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, forcing the second straight overtime game for both teams.
The Big Green's penalty kill was 5-for-5 on Saturday, including not allowing a shot on goal on either of the St. Lawrence opportunities in the third period.
Dartmouth controlled possession for the first bit of the overtime period, tallying two shots before the Saints found momentum. They put three shots on goal, ultimately scoring the game winner 2:50 into the period, defeating the Big Green, 2-1.
The matchup between the two teams earlier this season at St. Lawrence also ended in 2-1 overtime fashion in favor of the Saints. Powell also scored the lone Big Green goal in that contest.
Hesová finished the game with 35 saves, bringing her weekend total to 95.
With success on special teams and at even strength, head Coach
Maura Crowell said her team played well all the way through, but feels like points were left on the table.
"I just felt like we should have gotten it done," Crowell said. "We just talked about having more of that killer instinct in the offensive zone when we have our chances, especially in three-on-three… We understand that our defensive identity is really good, and we played great, great, great defensive hockey this weekend. But we can be better offensively with that same mentality."
Crowell also noted getting to the slot and the crease, the area in which the Big Green's lone goal was scored today, and making it uncomfortable on opponents.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend, heading on the road to take on Cornell and Colgate. Crowell's focus for her team is having a killer instinct and continuing to build on strong second periods.
"We love our second period systems. We have a good plan in place that allows us to create offense, and our players really have bought into that," Crowell said. [The second period] is huge in any game that can swing games one way or the other. So, hopefully that continues to be a strength for us."
Puck drop against the Cornell Big Red on Friday, January 30 is set for 6 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
