ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey traveled to New York this weekend, beginning with a Friday evening matchup with the #12 Cornell Big Red. The two teams played a scoreless first period before the Big Red opened a lead they would never surrender, defeating Dartmouth 5-0.
The Big Green came out of the gate strong, despite being outshot by the Big Red 16-6.
"We got after them, I think we set the tone. Shots might not say so, but we played good hockey," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about the first 20 minutes. "We were eager, ready to go, got some good looks on net. [
Jiahui Zhan] made some big saves; it was a good 20."
Each team also had a power play opportunity in the first period, but the penalty kill units were up to the task to help keep the game scoreless.
Cornell was able to break the scoreless game just over one minute into the second period. It remained a 1-0 game until the 8:09 mark when the Big Red doubled their lead.
Despite the deficit, it wasn't for a lack of chances.
"We had breakaways, we had back door tap ins, a lot of rebounds in the slot that we could have converted on and needed to and we didn't," Crowell said.
The Big Green entered the third period down 2-0 and wanted to get the first goal of the period, but Cornell was able to capitalize first. The Big Red made it a 3-0 game at the 2:33 mark before scoring two more goals in the next 7:06, making it a 5-0 game.
"It's understanding as we've talked that teams really push down on the gas pedal when they get that lead. And I think [Cornell] felt they could take advantage of their momentum, and they did," Crowell said. "I'd like to see us put up a better front in these moments."
Zhan finished the game with 30 saves in net for the Big Green, making double digit saves in the first (16) and second (10) periods.
The Big Green will now shift their focus to Saturday's matchup at Colgate, a team receiving votes in the national polls. Despite the score, Crowell was happy with the way her team played and reiterated that to the group.
"85% of that game we played extremely well. We played to our game plan," Crowell said. "We need to convert so we put ourselves in a better spot. If we convert early on some of those chances, it's a different game."
After last weekends' matchups inside Thompson Arena against Clarkson and St. Lawrence, Crowell emphasized her team having a killer instinct in the offensive zone. She continues to emphasize it, however, saw improvement against the Big Red.
"If you're watching our games, I thought we had some really good looks today, better looks than we've gotten," Crowell said. "I thought our defense created a lot of shot lanes, got pucks through, and it's tough, it's physical around the slot. It's positioning yourself in the right spot and being ready to bury when the puck pops out there."
"I know it's coming, and I know our group is really hungry for the goals, for the success, but I do think the majority of that game, we're happy with the way we played, regardless of the score," Crowell added.
The Big Green will be back in action Saturday against the Colgate Raiders with a 3 p.m. puck drop. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
