HAMILTON, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey concluded its road trip at Colgate this weekend, looking to earn its second straight win against the Raiders and first in Hamilton since 2015.
The Raiders got on the scoresheet first, opening as much as a two-goal lead en route to the 3-2 win over the Big Green.
Dartmouth took a penalty just 1:48 into the game, sending ECAC Hockey's fifth best power play unit onto the ice. It took them only 30 seconds to find the back of the net and take a 1-0 lead.
Just about three minutes later, the Big Green were sent to their first power play of the period. Despite putting six shots on net, the score remained in Colgate's favor.
With less than five minutes to play in the opening frame, the Big Green were given another power play opportunity. This time, it took them just 30 seconds to tie the game.
Bridget Pringle battled for the puck on the boards, sending it below the goal line and behind the net to
Hamilton Doster. Doster chipped it in front to an uncovered
Ella Inglis who buried the puck, making it a 1-0 game.
Before the period ended, the Raiders pulled ahead, scoring with a little over two and a half minutes left. While the Big Green were now down 2-1, they outshot the Raiders, 15-13.
"We needed to tighten up defensively," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about her message to the team coming out of the first period. "We talked about getting our goaltender more comfortable and I think we did that as the game went on. To score in the first, we hadn't done that in a while, so that was a good thing."
The Big Green held the Raiders to a one goal lead until just past the halfway mark of the game. Colgate found the back of the net at the 10:41 mark to make it a 3-1 game.
4:14 later, Dartmouth pulled itself back within one.
Miami Jones took a tour of the offensive zone before sending the puck cross ice to
Maura Fiorenza. Fiorenza took a shot with traffic in front, creating a rebound for the chagrining
Olivia Paidosh. Paidosh skated into it and poked it into the net, for her first career goal with the Big Green.
Paidosh, who is traditionally a defender, has been playing forward for the past three weeks for the Big Green, and was praised by Crowell after the game.
"It was her first goal, and I think a really great game for her overall," Crowell said. "We just highlighted her in the locker room, not only for the goal but for her hard nose play, getting pucks out of the d-zone, using the glass, doing what it takes, forechecking really hard all day, and glad to see her rewarded."
The Big Green will now return to Thompson Arena for the final regular season games in their home rink. Dartmouth will play Princeton on Friday, February 6 before hosting Quinnipiac for Senior Day on Saturday, February 7.
Crowell said the message for her team heading into the final four games of the regular season is stringing together a full 60-minute effort.
"I think we play good hockey in stretches and we need to put it together for 60," Crowell said. "[
Jiahui Zhan] made some great saves in the third period to give us an opportunity to pull the goalie and try to tie it up. I thought our team as a whole, it took us seven minutes to get into today's game, and we're done in those seven minutes. We really have to continue to dig deep, put it together for 60 or 65 minutes because we play good hockey when we are all locked in and dialed."
Puck drop against the Princeton Tigers on Friday, February 6 is set for 3 p.m. You can purchase tickets
