Jack Smith was named assistant coach of men's heavyweight rowing on July 24, 2023 and enters his first season at Dartmouth in 2023-24.
"There was an incredible groundswell of support and positive recommendations for Jack from the very beginning of our search, which speaks directly to the impact Jack has had on the coaching staffs, student-athletes and former teammates he has worked with," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "He clearly has an ability and desire to make those around him better. These qualities, along with how great of a fit he is for our team and its culture, were evident when he visited campus. Jack's experience rowing for four years and coaching for two at one of the best collegiate programs has given him a clear understanding of what it takes to compete and win at the highest level in our sport. His perspective will be a valuable addition to our coaching staff."
A 2016 graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, Smith served as volunteer assistant coach with Cal men's rowing since June of 2021 up until his hiring at Dartmouth. In his tenure at Berkeley, Smith was heavily involved in all aspects of the program's operation, including practices, competitions, coordinating travel and more. He also facilitated and organized the Ky Ebright Invitational regatta in 2022 and 2023, a two-time, five-team regatta out of the UC Berkeley boathouse with participants from over 500 miles away.
On the water, the Cal crews were incredibly successful over Smith's two seasons, winning the 2023 IRA National Championship, the Varsity Eight at the 2022 IRA National Championship and the Pac-12 Team Championship each of those years. Smith helped coach Cal's Varsity Four to the 2023 national title, and coached the boat to back-to-back conference championships.
While Smith was volunteer assistant with Cal, he also served as fundraising and financial director for Friends of California Crew at the California Rowing Club. Smith helped fundraise for Cal's general budget and for two new scholarships. From November, 2020 to May, 2021, he also served as assistant to the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer with USRowing.
As a student-athlete, Smith rowed at Cal for four years, graduating in 2020 and contributing to three consecutive top-four team point finishes at the IRA National Championship (the 2020 championships weren't contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic). All the while, Smith began generating valuable coaching experience, serving as assistant or associate head coach within different programs at Community Rowing, Inc. in Brighton, Massachusetts.
"I couldn't be more excited to join the Dartmouth rowing staff," said Smith. "The team is at a very exciting time in its rich history, and I feel that Wyatt, John (Graves) and Richie (Santry) did a great job to build positive momentum for the upcoming school year. I'm grateful to Wyatt for the opportunity and can't wait to get started with our student-athletes."
