Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2021 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by Cape Air.
This installment focuses on Newport, Rhode Island, native and member of the sailing team Timothy "Truckie" Greenway.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Timothy Greenway: All of my classes end around 1:30 in the afternoon so I have been trying to spend as much time outdoors as possible. It is really nice being able to do school work on the Green and then walk down to the river to hangout and swim.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
TG: My favorite place on campus is definitely the river. Especially on a summer day, the river makes the heat tolerable.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
TG: The professionalism of the coaching staff on the sailing team and the flexible school schedule. Being able to spend a summer on campus with my entire class and then take off next winter to do whatever I want is a pretty unique opportunity.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
TG: I would swap places with my crew. Although I skipper and crew, depending on the conditions we are competing in, I typically skipper and switching with my crew would give me some more perspective on how demanding the position is, which is something that can be easily overlooked.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
TG: I would be a place kicker on the football team. I was the kicker on my high school football team, and it was an incredible experience. The year I joined the team was coincidentally the year that the team went undefeated, and it made me look a lot better than I actually was. They were so good I never even had to attempt at field goal, all I had to do was kick extra points. I was a terrible soccer player and I had never kicked footballs before, but they didn't have another option for a kicker. I even tried to quit the team after the first week and switch back to soccer, but the coach sat me down and convinced me to stick with it.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
TG: I had the privilege of going to a boarding school that was right on the ocean in Rhode Island. Starting my sophomore year of high school, I would wake up before school and learn to surf at second beach with a few of my best friends and be able to sail competitively in the afternoon. Whether it is sailing or surfing, spending time on the water is an integral part of my life because it has always been a place I can go to clear my head. When I am on the water, I have no choice but to be present.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
TG: Definitely my younger brother. Growing up, we both had severe eczema that covered our entire bodies. Our bodies were covered in cuts that would crack and bleed and sometimes it got so bad that we wouldn't be able to hold a tennis racket. It was embarrassing, and it was something that our peers used to pick on us. I was always looking to my older siblings for guidance to help me deal with it, but it wasn't until after I outgrew my eczema that it my younger brother was the role model I needed. He is the most courageous, big-hearted person I know.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
TG: TJ Miller, because everyone thinks I look like him.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
TG: This past year we won the New England Match Racing Championships and got to travel to Newport Beach, California, to compete at nationals. Newport Beach was the coolest place I have ever sailed. We got to compete in these really unique boats designed for match racing, and when we were towing out to the race course on one of the days, a pod of dolphins were swimming and playing in our bow wake.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
TG: I grew up in Rye, New York, which is a small town on Long Island Sound, just a little way outside of New York City. Not being by the water is definitely a shift from what I am used to, but at the same time it is nice being able to ski during the winter. I definitely feel more removed when I am at school, but it is nice to get some breathing room and enjoy the natural beauty of New Hampshire.
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
TG: I try not to use my phone that much, but when I do I love the Apple News app.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
TG: Stranger Things
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
TG: I can belly dance.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
TG: Everyone calls me Truck or Truxtun.
DS: You step outside tomorrow morning and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
TG: Fund the construction of a new Dartmouth Sailing Boathouse and put the rest into saving.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
TG: I don't have any yet. Still trying to figure out exactly what I want to do. All I know is that I want to live somewhere warm and by the ocean.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
TG: Be open minded.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
TG: The Great Barrier Reef.
