Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Sarah Finlay of the women's swimming and diving team. The St. Louis, Missouri, native swam a number of different events throughout the season, showing improvement throughout. At the Ivy League Championship, she competed in the 1000 free, 400 IM and 200 back, swimming season bests in the first two events.
DartmouthSports: What is your favorite place on campus?
Sarah Finlay: I really like going down to the river to lay out and get a nice tan. I love the sun and since we do not have much of that here in Hanover, I try to take advantage of it as much as I can. It is nice to take a break from studying at times and hang out with friends. Sometimes I even bring work down there with me so that I can multitask by getting work done and tanning.
DS: If you participate in any service activities, what are they and how did you get involved?
SF: I am a co-director for a non-profit organization here on campus called Camp Kesem. We support kids of parents who have cancer in our week-long camp over the summer. My dad passed away of cancer my freshman year of high school and ever since, I have desired to give back to the people experiencing the same thing that I went through. This has been such a rewarding opportunity for me as I feel like I have made a difference in these kids' lives.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
SF: I started watching Grey's Anatomy a long time ago and have been obsessed ever since. It's kind of a coincidence that I came to Dartmouth after this because I have always loved Shonda Rhimes. Once I got addicted to Grey's, I thought I wanted to be a doctor, but that has changed since then.
DS: What was the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
SF: I specifically chose Dartmouth because I knew that it was going to be a great balance for me academically as well as athletically, but also, the moment I walked on campus, I immediately felt welcomed. The student body on this campus stuck out to me most out of all places. My host would introduce me as a recruit and people were eager to meet and get to know me whereas at other schools I was "just the prospee." At Dartmouth I had an identity. One of my host's friends even saw me later that day on campus without my host and went out of her way to say hi to me. This is what makes Dartmouth genuinely unique.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
SF: My brother has had a huge impact on my life. He is the one who gave me motivation and taught me how to be so hardworking. His drive has led him to great success and it has inspired me specifically in the pool. I have looked up to him ever since I was a young and I strive to be like him one day.
DS: What has been your best on-deck memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
SF: I think my favorite memory on-deck thus far was at the Columbia meet this year. The women and men had separate meets and the women were after the men. The men were all late to the women's meet, so they felt that they had to make up for it by cheering excessively. They created a new cheer by raising their hands above their head and clapping in a lone pine position. They were all in sync and everyone in the natatorium could hear them. Their enthusiasm helped all of us swim faster and created an all-around motivating and exciting environment.
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
SF: I was actually off this past spring because with swimming we can only be off in the spring. I did marketing for a fashion company in LA and absolutely loved it! Not only was LA great because of the weather and beaches, but I really loved the fashion industry as well. I have also become obsessed with clothes and my outfits and I could definitely see myself going into this industry in the future.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
SF: Hanover is very different from St. Louis where I grew up. Even though I do not live in the city, it is still much more urban than Hanover is. Also, St. Louis does not get nearly as cold as Hanover in the winter, however, our summers are much worse. We get a really hot humid summer, but great tanning weather. St. Louis is also very preppy as it is kind of southern, so people dress a lot differently here than they do at home.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
SF: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth, I would be a diver. Even though this is technically the same sport as swimming, they are so vastly different. I would be a diver because 1) I am small and have the right body type, 2) I love the water, so I would still be around it all the time, and 3) I would get to sit in the hot tub rather than the ice bath at meets.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now where would you go and why?
SF: If I could go anywhere in the world right now, I would travel to Australia. I've always wanted to go to Australia to see the koalas and kangaroos. I'm also scuba diving certified and would love to dive in the Great Barrier Reef before it completely dies out. The warm weather would also be a major plus.
