Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Bailee Brekke of the women's hockey team. Hailing from Oxford, Ohio, Brekke played in all 27 games throughout the 2017-18 season and, although she did not register a point, she was an integral part of the defense.
DartmouthSports: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Bailee Brekke: I've been spending a lot of time outdoors with my friends and have been meeting a ton of new people in my year through classes and DRIVE. I also train with my teammates and because we have a small class we've gotten really close this summer. This term has been a great balance of a few tough academic courses and a lot of fun Dartmouth events.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
BB: When I was in high school I had the opportunity of working with people with dementia at a top nursing facility for the elderly. It was an extremely eye-opening experience and I realized that I really want to get involved with Alzheimer's research once I graduate from college and (before then) continue to volunteer at similar facilities.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
BB: My favorite place on campus is the rink. Before coming to Dartmouth, it was something that made me fall in love with this school and this program. There's so much history there and it's truly an honor to call it home.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
BB: Shannon Ropp. Shan is one of the wittiest, smartest, and most caring people that I have met here at Dartmouth. I really look up to her as a leader and would love to trade places with her to learn how she does it all.
DS: What has been your best on-ice memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
BB: I would say that my favorite on ice memory is our 1-0 win against Quinnipiac this past season. The game was so nerve wrecking, but also a ton of fun. The whole team was all in, especially Sue (
Christine Honor) who stood on her head in net. I think it was an inspirational game for our team as we all realized how capable we are when we all buy in.
DS: What was the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
BB: I came to Dartmouth with my dad during the winter of my senior year in high school. It was during winter break so the campus was quiet since most of the students had gone home, but between the rink, the snow-covered Baker Berry Library, and the nachos from Molly's, I knew this was where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
BB: If I could play another sport here at Dartmouth, I would want to be on the cross country and/or track and field team. I loved running in high school and I have so much respect for runners because it is such a tough, mental sport.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
BB: In a lot of ways, Dartmouth is very similar to my hometown in Ohio. Being the daughter of a college hockey coach, I've always lived in a college town and I love being a part of a college centered community. I'm also used to the small-town atmosphere after having lived in the middle of Ohio for the past ten years and I think that's another reason why I fell in love with Dartmouth, because it is so like home.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
BB: The Office. I have watched that show all the way through, multiple times.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
BB: As of right now I know I want to move back to the mid-west following graduation, to be close to family. I am considering graduate school for economics as well as psychology. But, I will definitely be involved in Alzheimer's research somehow.
