Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2025 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on Sammy Houdaigui of the men's heavyweight rowing program.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Sammy Houdaigui: I've spent the summer training for the Under 23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria where we placed third. It's a tremendous privilege to race for your country and we're enormously proud to bring home hardware. In 2021, I competed in the same boat class at the same venue for junior worlds where we placed fourth so righting that wrong was a major focus of the summer for me. Dartmouth hosted the men's team this year and while I'm definitely biased, I don't think there is a better training location in the world. The Team USA squad is made up of rowers from colleges all over the country but two of my teammates (Julian Thomas and Jacob Hudgins) are also on the team and two more are at worlds with the Great Britain and Australian squads. With selection and training for the US crews being based out of the Dartmouth boathouse, I've still been able to take classes, including an independent study with Professor Michael Wyatt that has been very engaging. Next, I plan to be a counselor for the Dartmouth rowing camps.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
SH: Easily the green. Nothing better than playing catch with teammates on it.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
SH: Coach Allen and the team culture he's fostered. I think if anyone on the squad was asked that question, they'd give the same answer and that's a testament to Coach. Guys not only buy into the vision he has for the program, but also do what it takes to make that happen. Something that Coach emphasized during the recruiting process, and that I could see after visiting the team, was that Dartmouth rowers don't break under adversity. Having a culture that's prepared and willing to face adversity head on excited me.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
SH: Munroe Robinson because he can grow a better beard in week then I can in a month… and to a lesser extent, because I respect his work ethic and character.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
SH: The club boxing team. If rowing doesn't work out, I'm going for the title.
DS: If there was one movie that you could watch again for the first time, what movie would it be and why?
SH: Scarface as it's my favorite movie. If you look past the illegal activity, it's a very inspiring story about an immigrant who earns the American dream.
DS: If you could choose one moment in sports history that you could have been at, what moment would it be and why?
SH: The 1980 Lake Placid Olympics to see the Miracle on Ice.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
SH: Hopefully make the senior national team and/or cox at the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race in the UK.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
SH: Handle adversity like a Dartmouth heavyweight.
