Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Lauren Sapone of the women's cross country team. A three-sport athlete, Sapone had a strong second year in cross country, indoor and outdoor track in 2017-18 that included new personal-best times in every event.
Dartmouth Sports: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Lauren Sapone: I'm actually taking this summer as my off-term, as many cross country runners do, since we are in-season/competing during the fall, winter and spring. So I'm doing an internship at a start-up called FreshAir that was founded by a chemistry professor from Dartmouth and a Tuck alum.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
LS: I would say my favorite place on campus is probably the river or the 4th floor of Fairchild Tower (at least for studying).
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
LS: When I visited Dartmouth for my official visit and I know this is going to sound corny, but it just felt like home. I am fairly easy to please, and so I did enjoy most of the visits I went on and the schools I was recruited by, but there was something special about Dartmouth that just made me feel so welcome.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
LS: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth, I think it would be lacrosse, because that was one of the many sports I played when I was younger before I committed fully to running, and I absolutely loved it. I thought it was a super fun sport and do find myself missing it at times.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
LS: I am honestly most passionate about just having a balanced life and making sure I spend quality time with friends or new people, and hopefully having a positive impact on people's lives. I enjoy helping others through community service clubs, traveling and baking/cooking.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
LS: My best athletic memory thus far in my Dartmouth career would probably be at Indoor Heps (the Ivy League Championship Meet) this year at home in Leverone, right after my teammate Bridget O'Neill and I finished third and fifth in the mile. It was just an incredible feeling to finish in those places right alongside my best friend and teammate, with all our friends and family cheering and going crazy.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
LS: I grew up in a small suburban town in New Jersey, near the beach, and so Hanover is pretty different. Living an hour's drive from the mountains, 40 minutes away from New York City, and 10 minutes from the beach, I had a lot more variety in what I could do, but I absolutely love being in Hanover. It gives me many more opportunities to go hiking and go to cute little New England towns like White River Junction and Woodstock. The small-town feel is similar, which I love, and I think makes me feel more at home.
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
LS: The first useless/hidden talent I can think of is doing that clover thing with my tongue, but my teammates/friends all make fun of me because I have to make a funny face to be able to do that with my tongue.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
LS: My best advice to my 15-year old self is "It's all going to work out - so have fun and don't worry about college and the future so much. When you get older you realize that most people are really just sort of winging it. I mean of course that's an exaggeration, but everyone acts like they have it all together much more than they actually do, so you don't need to feel like you're the only one who doesn't. Also value your time with the people you're with in the moment, and try not to always be looking towards for the next day, the next weekend, the next year."
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
LS: If I could go anywhere in the world right now, I would probably go to Bari, Italy. My family is from there originally, and it's a beautiful little coastal town in Italy with lots of rich culture and beautiful views. I would love to get to explore Bari for even a few days.
