Torpey comes to Hanover for his first season as the top assistant for the Big Green after four years at the University of Denver.
During his years as part of the
Denver staff, Torpey helped lead the Pioneers to two Great Western
Lacrosse League championships with one coming as the program’s first
outright title in 2006 and gave Denver its first NCAA appearance. In
his first season he helped the Pioneers to a 9-5 overall record, a
share of the GWLL title and a No. 18 final ranking in the USILA
Geico/STX Coaches Poll.
Prior to joining the Denver staff and
while playing in the National Lacrosse League, Torpey was an assistant
coach at Denison University. He helped the team make it to the 2001
Division III final four. Torpey spent three seasons at Goucher College
in Baltimore, where his defense went from outside the rankings to No.
13 in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 8.14 goals per game.
Torpey,
a 2000 graduate of Ohio State University, was a three-time captain and
All-Academic Big Ten selection for the Buckeyes. He was also named a
Street and Smith College Lacrosse USA All-American as a senior and was
a four-time Scholar Athlete Award Winner at Ohio State. In addition, he
was a finalist for the Big Ten Medal of Honor and the Corwin A. Fergus
Award.
Upon graduation, Torpey played with the Columbus
Landsharks, the Philadelphia Wings and the Colorado Mammoth for two
seasons each, including winning the 2006 World Championship. Torpey
also played with the Denver Outlaws and Philadelphia Barrage of the MLL
and he won titles with each of them as he was an MLL champion in
2004-05 and 2005-06. He spent one summer with the Victoria Shamrocks in
the WLA and won the Mann Cup.
Torpey earned his
bachelor’s degree in education in 2000 and earned his master’s degree
in sports administration and education at Goucher College in 2003
during his time as an assistant coach.
