BOSTON - At the NCAA Northeast Region Meet on Saturday, the Dartmouth men's cross country team placed second out of 33 teams to claim one of the two automatic bids to the NCAA championship. Iona was first with 33 points, while Dartmouth amassed 50 points. The meet was hosted by Northeastern and run at Franklin Park.
"I was very excited for our team. We ran a great race and Iona had to run an outstanding race to beat us. They're definitely among the the top 10 teams in the country," said head coach Barry Harwick.
Sophomore Ben True (Yarmouth, Maine) was the top finisher for the Big Green and he was third in a time of 30:03.8. Sophomore Alec Wall (Portland, Ore.) was seventh in 30:07.5, while senior Dave Burnham (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) finished 11th in 30:19.1. Junior Ian Marcus (Amherst, Mass.) covered the course in 30:29.0 to place 13th and sophomore Matt Davis (Bend, Ore.) rounded out the scoring for the Big Green by taking 16th in a time of 30:42.2.
Dartmouth will be making its 18th trip to the NCAA championship, but its first since 2001. Both the 1986 and 1987 squads finished second at the NCAA meet.
On the women's side, Dartmouth tied Harvard for ninth place with 271 points. Boston College and Columbia were the top finishers among the 37 teams and they earned the automatic bids to the NCAA championship.
Senior Melanie Schorr (Suffield, Conn.) finished seventh overall in a time of 20:51.5 and qualified as an individual for the NCAAs. Schorr will be making her second trip to the NCAA championship. She also qualified in 2003 when she finished 144th out of 252 runners.
