PRINCETON, N.J. -- Despite a career-high six goals by junior
Alec Hufnagel (Scarsdale, N.Y.), the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-8 decision to Princeton on Saturday.
Hufnagel potted four goals in the fourth quarter as No. 11 Dartmouth tried to rally from an 8-4 deficit after three periods.
Hufnagel opened the final stanza, connecting off a feed from sophomore
Nick Bonacci (Crofton, Md.) with 1:44 gone. After Princeton's Peter Trombino and Scott Sowanick pushed the Tiger lead back to 10-5, Hufnagel scored three in a three-minute stretch.
His final two goals -- at 5:44 and 4:50 -- both were assisted by junior
Jamie Coffin (Greenwich, Conn.) but the Big Green couldn't get closer in the final minutes.
Princeton goalie Alex Hewit, a freshman, faced 40 Dartmouth shots, making 16 saves. In the final four minutes of the game, he made four saves and thwarted a Big Green extra-man opportunity for 56 seconds with two saves and a ground ball.
The Big Green outshot Princeton, 40-25.
In the Dartmouth goal, senior
Andrew Goldstein (Milton, Mass.) made six saves. Coffin, the Ivy League's leading scorer going into the game, was held to two assists. He was held scoreless on 12 shots.
In addition to Hufnagel's goals, junior
Brad Heritage (Cheshire, Conn.) rounded out the Dartmouth scoring with two of his own.
Dartmouth, 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League, can clinch at least a share of second place in the Ancient Eight with a victory over Harvard in next Saturday's game. Princeton, 4-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference, can also clinch a share of the runner-up spot with a win against Brown on Saturday.
