BALTIMORE - Senior captains Ben Grinnell (Waccabuc, N.Y.) and Pat Keeley (Potomac, Md.) are among 120 players who have been invited by US Lacrosse to try out for the 2006 Men's Lacrosse Team. Grinnell is one of 42 midfielders selected and Keeley is one of 36 defensemen picked. The U.S. Team Men's Player Selection Committee, chaired by three-time U.S. team player Larry Quinn, narrowed the field from approximately 200 applicants.
The tryouts will be held from June 13-16 at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, and 23 players will be selected from those tryouts to represent the United States at the International Lacrosse Federation World Championships in July 2006 in London, Ontario.
"Expect to see almost all scrimmaging," said Quinn. "Guys will be randomly put on teams. Later on, if the committee wants to see certain match-ups or see how certain guys play together, they'll do that."
Syracuse head coach John Desko is the head coach for the 2006 U.S. Men's Team. He will be assisted by Denison's Mike Caravana, Hobart's Matt Kerwick and Albany's Scott Marr.
Grinnell, a second team preseason All-America selection, currently ranks third on the Dartmouth squad with 33 points (16 G, 17A). He led the Big Green in scoring in 2004 and was a first team All-New England and All-Ivy pick.
Keeley is one of Dartmouth's top defenders and is typically assigned to the opposing team's top attacking player. A third team preseason All-America pick, he earned first team All-New England and All-Ivy honors in 2004.
