The Dartmouth cross country teams opened their seasons with strong showings in split-squad meets on Saturday, as three of four teams in competition won their respective races.
At the 13th Annual Murray Keatinge Invitational in Orono, Maine, the men won and the women finished third, each in a field of 11. The men finished with 35 points, followed closely by Ivy rival Brown (48) and Iowa (61). Each of the Big Green's top five finishers completed the 4.96-mile course in less than 25 minutes. Freshman Ben True (North Yarmouth, Maine) paced the squad with a fourth-place finish and a time of 24:31, junior Dave Burnham (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) was fifth at 24:36, senior Noah Kaufman (Madison, Wis.) was seventh at 24:38.6, senior Quinn Thomas (Wilmington, N.C.) was eighth at 24:38.9, and junior Steve Mucchetti (Ridgefield, Conn.) was 11th at 24:46.
On the women's side, Dartmouth's 74 points placed it behind only Southern Methodist (35) and Boston College (72). Junior Melanie Schorr (Suffield, Conn.) had the best finish for the Big Green on the 5K course, placing sixth at 17:25. Rounding out Dartmouth's top five were freshman Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) in 10th at 17:35, junior Megan Olds (Gloversville, N.Y.) in 16th at 17:51, sophomore Hilary Dionne (Cumberland, R.I.) in 18th at 17:53, and senior Jillian Mastroianni (New York, N.Y.) in 24th at 18:09.
Dartmouth also sent teams to the Keene State College Invitational in Keene, N.H., where each team paced the field.
The women won in a field of eight teams with 34 points, narrowly edging out host Keene (35). Each of Dartmouth's top five finished in the top 10 overall and completed the 5K race in nearly 20 minutes. Freshman Laura Moser (Croghan, N.Y.) was second at 19:06, freshman Kristin Ricci (Harvard, Mass.) was sixth at 19:52, junior Meredith Curtis (Bellingham, Wash.) was seventh at 19:57, freshman Elisa McCarthy (Denver, Colo.) was ninth at 20:04, and freshman Alison Hillas placed 10th at 20:05.
The Big Green men ended Keene's five-year reign as victors of its own tournament, winning for the first time in the five years it has competed at Keene. Dartmouth finished with 28 points while Keene placed second with 44. Senior Neal Graves (Ashfield, Mass.) was second and finished the five-mile course in 25:50, freshman Grant Allen (Sugar Grove, Pa.) was fourth at 26:20, junior George McArdle (Brookline, Mass.) was fifth at 26:22, senior John Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn.) was seventh at 26:27, and junior Mark Brissette (Stonington, Conn.) was 10th at 26:44.
