AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR 2007 CAPTAINS:
Nick Bonacci: The Dartmouth experience is unlike that of any other college or university. Our campus represents a world of its own, a place where every student can escape from the pressures of the outside world and find out the type of person he is. Together, the students endure harsh winters, short days, and a rigorous academic schedule. Outweighing all of these experiences are the outstanding individuals who are attracted to Dartmouth, who together, enjoy spectacular autumns, unforgettable summers, and the most beautiful setting on earth. Through the highs and the lows, Dartmouth students cannot escape the fact that they overcome their obstacles together, and share in each others' achievements. These shared experiences teach the men of Dartmouth valuable lessons about what it truly means to be a well-rounded individual. There is a plaque on Dartmouth's campus referring to the life of John Ledyard, one of Dartmouth's first students, which reads, "He too heard a voice crying out in the wilderness. His was the Dartmouth spirit." The Dartmouth spirit is an unbreakable one, because the preparation that students receive here is not only preparation for medical school or for a job on Wall Street. Rather, students are prepared for life, whatever it may bring. Because of this preparation, I feel confident when I look my Harvard and Princeton counterparts in the eye and tell them that I attend the best College in the world.
Wilson Handler: It is difficult to put into words what it means to play lacrosse for Dartmouth College. The experience cannot be defined by any one disappointment or achievement, but instead by the relationships forged over the four years. Many teams have the highs of beating top five programs and the lows of narrowly missing an NCAA birth, but few have the opportunity to face these challenges with your best friends. It becomes easy to put in the time, energy and sacrifices necessary to succeed knowing that everyone around you is putting in the same effort because nobody wants to let another teammate down. Every time you step on the field you are playing for those around you and those who came before you. It is amazing to look back on the past three years, look at how much I have learned on and off the field, and feel no hesitation in saying that I wouldn't give them up for anything. Daniel Webster said it best, as "It is a small college. And yet there are those who love it." It is not the top-notch facilities, the gorgeous New England campus or the win-loss column, but the men of Dartmouth that defines one's experience.
Ryan O'Connor: There is a famous quote by Daniel Webster where he states "up in the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there he makes men." These famous words can be used to describe the Men's Lacrosse program here at Dartmouth. Every day I get the chance to work hard, sweat and bleed with some of my best friends.
Also, because of Dartmouth Lacrosse, I have had some of the greatest experiences in my life, most notable being our win over perennial powerhouse Maryland during my sophomore season. But aside from the success in athletics, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the Dartmouth experience. I have met friends for life from diverse backgrounds and from far away places. The classroom has provided me with learning opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere. This special place brings it all together. If I had known in high school half of what I know about Dartmouth today, I would have only filled out one college application.
