HANOVER, N.H. -- Even after a career-high, 10 save, performance from sophomore Jordan Sedlacek (Golden, Colo.), the Big Green couldn't muster up a win over the University of Vermont in today's non-conference field hockey match.
The Catamounts pounced all over the Big Green's defense from the opening whistle. The Cats Danielle Collins forced a Dartmouth turnover in just the second minute of play, as Collins stripped the ball from Dartmouth back, Caitlin Carey (Rye, N.Y.), and broke in on goalie Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.). After a crafty move, Collins slid the ball past a diving Heist to give the Cats an early lead.
Just six minutes later it was Collins again who took on another Dartmouth defender along the endline, and beat Heist low to the near side to give Vermont a 2-0 lead.
In the 20th minute, the Cats, again, jumped on the Big Greens defense. After being awarded a corner, Nikki Desch found herself unmarked in front of the cage. Kate Lipton noticed the opportunity and hit Desch with a one-timed pass, which Desch finished on a solid strike to the lower right corner beating, the new goalie, Sedlacek.
The Big Green fought their way back late in the first half when junior Lizzie Bildner (Manchester, Mass.) stole the ball from the Cats defense and rifled a shot on net. Goalie Kristen Heavens turned away the initial shot, but it was Allison Weinstock (Pittsburgh, Pa.) who was right there for the finish.
In the early portion of the second half, the Big Green took advantage of its only corner of the period, as captain Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) rifled a shot, stopped by Stef Miller (South Plainfield, N.J.) into the right corner of the cage, which brought the Big Green within one.
The Cats kept clawing their way into the Dartmouth end though, taking 12 shots in the second period, and forcing Sedlacek to make eight impressive saves, to keep the Big Green in the game.
It was Vermont's Lipton who put it away for the Cats in the 66th minute, as she picked up a loose ball and knocked it past a streched-out Sedlacek.
Dartmouth was out shot 21-4 on the night, as they move to 3-9 on the season. With the win, the Catamounts improve to 9-6.
The Big Green will travel to Columbia on Friday to take on Lions in an Ivy League match-up. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
