New York, N.Y. -- The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped its fifth game in a row today in New York City, as the Lions of Columbia knocked off the Big Green, 5-0, in this Ivy League match-up.
The Lions wasted no time laying it on the Big Green defense. After earning a penalty corner in just the seventh minute of play, the Lions Ashley McMasters faked a shot, and found Laura Cosan who burried the it past Big Green net minder Jordan Sedlacek (Golden, Colo.). Just two mintues later the Lions offensive pressure was rewarded with another corner opportunity. This time it was Ramie Merrill who finished a pass from Kim Branch to the right side to put the Lions up 2-0 early in the contest.
The Big Green pressured Columbia's goalie only twice in the first half, forcing Gena Miller to make only a couple of saves. Sedlacek turned away seven first-half chances to keep the Big Green in the game heading into the second half.
Coming out firing again in period number two, Columbia's Megan Davidson picked up a rebound just three minutes in and beat Sedlacek high to the right side of the net. It looked as though the Lions were scoring in pairs when, not two mintues later, Jacqui Munro rifled a shot off another corner to the stick side of Sedlacek. After being down 4-0, head coach Amy Fowler called on captain Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) to relieve Sedlacek in net. Sedlacek ended the night with eight saves.
The goalie change didnt phase the Lions though, as they continued to apply pressure on the Big Green's defense. In the 45th minute, Munro recorded her second tally of the match as she, again, fired a shot off a corner that skipped by Heist to give Columbia a 5-0 lead.
On the day, the Big Green were out shot 18-7, and only had four corners, compared to the Lions 11.
This was the first Ivy League victory for the Lions, as they now mover to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the Ivies. With the loss the Big Green fall to 3-10 on the year. They will do battle with Boston University on Sunday, Oct. 22, in Boston, Mass. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
