HANOVER, N.H. -- Two goals from junior Lizzie Bildner (Manchester, Mass.) couldn't produce a win for the Dartmouth field hockey team, as they fell to Syracuse, 3-2, in an overtime battle at Scully-Fahey field.
The Big Green, in their last home game of the season, started out hot, pressuring Syracuse's' defense from the beginning. The Big Green took advantage of their first penalty corner in just the second minute of play, when Bildner tipped a shot from Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) into the lower right side of the cage, giving Dartmouth an early lead.
Syracuse's Alison Babbit evened the score at one apiece in the 15th minute of play when she redirected a shot from teammate Megan Stuart that beat Big Green net minder Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) to the right hand side.
Going into the second half, the score sheet looked fairly even. Both teams had mustered up five shots on goal, and the scoreboard was tied at ones.
The Orange broke the tie early in the second half, as Jess Wreski blasted a shot to the lower left side of the cage, beating a stretched out Heist.
But the Big Green's special teams fought their way back mid-way through the second stanza. Megan Strout (St. Louis, Mo.) pushed a corner chance out to a loaded Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) who rifled a shot towards the cage. Before Orange goalie Marie O'Brien could get a piece of it, Bildner tipped it in from the weak side.
Bildners' tallies turned into overtime for the Big Green. But their battle was cut short, as the Orange were given a penalty shot just three minutes into the overtime session. Wreski buried the shot to the upper left corner, beating a diving Heist, for the win.
Heist ended the contest making six saves, while O'Brien recorded two stops for the victory. The Orange ended their regular season today, finishing with a 10-9 overall record. The Big Green, who falls to 3-13 on the season, will close out their campaign on the road next weekend as they travel to Cornell.
