Hanover, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Yale this afternoon. The loss drops the Big Green to 3-6 / 1-3 Ivy while the Bulldogs improve to 3-7 / 2-1 Ivy. Yale came out swinging, taking 15 shots to Dartmouth's nine for the contest.
Yale struck early, capitalizing on a corner opportunity in the eighth minute. Senior Lindsay Collins took the corner, which stopper Harriet Thayer caught, setting up a clean shot for senior Heather Orrico, who nailed the ball from 16 yards out.
The squads battled in midfield before Dartmouth was able to find the goal after a scramble in Yale's defensive end. Junior Katy Hagy (Bedford, Mass.) emerged from the cluster to score the Big Green's lone goal of the day.
Both teams had their chances for the balance of the half, but would take a 1-1 tie into halftime.
Dartmouth junior Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) made a big defensive play early in the second half, sprinting to catch Yale's Orrico, who was on a breakaway. Waugh managed to cleanly block the ball from behind, preventing a possible goal for the Bulldogs.
Just five minutes later, Yale's Lindsay Collins scored from the right side on a hard shot from close range to give her team the 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs continued to control the pace of the second half and managed to score a third goal in regulation when Cat Lindroth faked out the defense and fired a shot into the left side of the goal past a diving Jordan Sedlacek (Golden Colo).
Sedlacek, a sophomore, made five saves on the day for Dartmouth. Sophomore defender Amanda Dumville played a full 70 minutes at defense and recorded a defensive save in the 43rd minute.
Yale took five penalty corners to Dartmouth's one.
The Big Green will be back in action on Monday when it hosts Patriot League foe Holy Cross at 5:00 p.m.
