HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team lost an explosive non-conference game to Holy Cross, 2-1, in overtime at Scully-Fahey field.
The two teams went back and forth for the first half recording only eight shots between them. The first solid chance came in the 19th minute as Dartmouth's Lizzie Bildner (Manchester, Mass.) rifled a shot on net from the top of the half-circle, only to be deflected away by Holy Cross keeper Erin Singleton.
On the following possession the Crusaders answered with a chance of their own as Sara O'Coin sprinted past the Dartmouth defense and lifted a shot towards the cage. Dartmouth co-captain Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) rejected the shot making kick save with her right pad and preserving a first half shutout.
The Big Green came out quick in the second half jumping all over the defensive line of the Crusaders. On the Big Green's one, and only, penalty corner of the game, co-captain Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) blasted a shot, stopped by Stef Miller (South Plainfield, N.J.) to the lower right corner of the cage giving the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth held off the Crusaders attack for 20 minutes until Eli Skovron picked up a loose ball in front of the net and knocked it past Heist for the equalizer.
At the beginning of the seven-on-seven overtime period, the Crusaders controlled play keeping the ball in the Big Green end. In the 80th minute, the Crusaders Tara Welch found a loose ball in front of the net and ripped it past a stretched-out Heist to give Holy Cross the victory.
With the win the Crusaders improve to 10-3, while the Big Green fall to 3-7. Dartmouth's Heist ended the contest making 10 saves, while Singleton turned away two Big Green chances.
Dartmouth will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to take on No. 2 Wake Forest in a non-league game. Game time is scheduled for noon.
