HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team lost to Colgate for the first time in school history tonight at Thompson Arena, as the Raiders knocked off No. 5 Dartmouth, 2-1.
The Raiders drew first blood midway through the first period, on the power play, when Sam Hunt rifled a wrist shot from the right circle beating Big Green net minder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) over the glove.
The Big Green battled back four minutes later when sophomore Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up a loose puck in front of the Colgate net and jammed it home to even the score at one apiece. Assists on McMillan's second goal of the season were given to line mates Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.)
Both teams fought hard in the second period, but couldn't put anything on the scoreboard. The Big Green won the battle of shots in the period, putting 12 chances on Raider goalie Elayna Hamashuck, but the steady sophomore turned them all away. Colgate had three shots in the second period.
The final period started off slow, as neither team could produce any solid offensive chances. The Raiders Elin Brown broke the silence at 11:28 in the third, when she took a pass from Carly McNaughton and buried it past Clemis for the 2-1 lead.
Dartmouth had their first real chance of the period when a loose puck trickled behind Hamashuck and teetered on the goal line. The Big Green pounced on the chance, but couldn't capitalize for a goal.
In a last ditch effort, head coach Mark Hudak pulled Clemis for the extra-skater advantage. A couple of Big Green shots were denied by Hamashuck in the pressure situation, which gave the Raiders their first win over Dartmouth in program history.
Hamashuck recorded 32 saves for the win, while Clemis turned away 15 Colgate chances.
The loss is Dartmouth's first ECAC loss of the season, as they move to 5-1-0 in the league. With the win the Raiders improve to 3-1-0 in ECAC play.
Dartmouth kicks off their four-game road stretch on Friday, November 17, when they travel to Yale. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
