PROVIDENCE, RI - In its final match of the season, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team (12-12, 6-8 Ivy) defeated Brown (8-18, 4-10) in a thrilling five-game set on Saturday afternoon in the Pizzitola Memorial Sports Center. The Bears opened the match with a 30-27 win in the opening game, but the Big Green won the next two, 30-28 and 30-21. The Bears recovered to win the fourth 30-23, but Dartmouth held on in the decisive fifth game, 15-12.
That the match was going to be a tight one was evident in the first game. It was a back-and-forth contest that the Bears essentially won thanks to a four-point run to go up three at 24-21. From there, the teams played relatively even as Brown protected its three-point lead. The second game was even tighter, as the teams traded runs and wound up tied at 28-28. However, a pair of Brown attack errors gave the Big Green the win to tie the match.
Dartmouth went up quickly in Game Three going up 7-1 early. The Big Green extended that lead to 15-6, and Brown was unable to catch up. With its back to the wall, the home team came out strong in the fourth game, opening a 15-7 lead before a pair of Dartmouth runs put the score to 19-17 in its favor. Brown tied the game up at 22-22, pulling away by winning nine of the final 11 points. In the fifth game, the teams were tied late, but the Big Green were able to pull out the final points to win the match.
Five Big Green players were in double digits in kills. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) and Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the team with 14 kills apiece. Katie Hirsch (Katie Hirsch) was tops for Dartmouth with 60 assists while adding 10 digs and four blocks. Nadine Parris (Plymouth, Minn.) was stellar at the net with 11 kills and seven total blocks. Freshman Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) led the Big Green with 21 digs. Dartmouth outhit the Bears, .228 to .211 and outblocked the home team, 25 to 16.
