CANTON, N.Y. -- Olympians Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.), Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) and Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) were the difference makers, as the Big Green held on for a 3-2 win over No. 3 St. Lawrence in their third ECACHL game of the season.
It was the Scarlet and Brown who struck first half way through the first period as the Saints worked their power play around the Dartmouth defense. Abbie Bullard blasted a shot from the point that was deflected by Marianna Locke past Big Green net minder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Six minutes later the Big Green had their turn to show off their power play unit. Sophomore Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) rifled a low shot from the blue line that was easily saved by Saints goaltender Meaghan Guckian, but Weatherston jumped all over the rebound and popped it past, to even the game at ones heading into intermission. The goal comes in Weatherston's first game of the season.
The Big Green special teams shined again at the 7:40 mark of the second period when they were given a two-man advantage. Piper made a nice feed to the freshman Parsons who wristed a shot over the pad of Guckian to give the Big Green their first lead of the game. Bronson was also credited with an assist on Parsons fifth goal of the season. The assists were Pipers eigth, and Bronsons seventh thus far.
In the closing seconds of the second stanza, the Big Green added one more to the scoreboard, as captain Apps stuffed home a second try shot past Guckian to put Dartmouth in the drivers seat heading into the third. The Big Green out shot the Saints 17-10 in the second period.
The Saints wouldn't give up so easily though, applying early pressure to the young Clemis. The Saints Alison Domenico skated in on the right side of Clemis. The attempted feed to her teammate caused the Big Green defender to slide for the block. Although the block was successful, the puck and defender were slammed into Clemis, and the red light went on bringing the Saints within one.
A couple of costly penalties by the Saints in the third period managed to be too much to handle being down a goal. The Big Green continuted to apply pressure in the St. Lawrence zone, which ultimately led to the win.
On the evening the Big Green edged out the Scarlet and Brown in shots, 39-25. Clemis made 23 saves on the night, earning her second straight win. Guckian stopped 36 Big Green chances for the Saints, who were defeated for just their second time this season.
Dartmouth stays undefeated in league play, at 3-0, going up against Clarkson on Saturday in Potsdam, N.Y. The puck will drop at 4:00 p.m.
