PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team lost the opening game of the ECAC Hockey League quarterfinal series to Brown this evening, 4-2.
The Big Green came into the game as the sixth-seed and now faces an uphill climb, needing to win two straight to reach the semifinals.
Both teams started the game cautiously, feeling each other out and trying to avoid mistakes. But late in the first, the Bears struck first while on the power play. Hayley Moore notched her 22nd goal of the season at 14:51 to give the home team the lead, 1-0, heading into the first intermission.
The offenses came to life for both teams in the second. The Bears doubled their lead with a shorthanded goal just 3:50 into the second. Keaton Zucker stole the puck behind the Big Green net then came out front and snuck it through the five-hole to increase Brown's lead, 2-0. At 5:32, the Bears jumped ahead, 3-0, on a goal by Rylee Olewinski, ending Clemis' night.
Just over a minute later, at 6:48, Dartmouth cut into the lead with a power play goal of its own. Freshman Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) got her own rebound and slid it past the Brown netminder, with sophomore Nicole Ruta (Pickering, Ont.) and freshman Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) getting assists on the play. But less than a minute later, the Bears made it 4-1 with Zucker's second of the game.
On the second half of a double minor to Brown's Myria Heinhuis, Dartmouth's power play converted again. Senior Alex Zagaria (Rochester, Minn.) notched her third of the season during a scramble in front of the net at 12:12 of the second to cut the lead to two, 4-2. Assists were credited to junior Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Que.) and freshman Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.).
A quick third period saw plenty of up-and-down action, but no scoring as both goalies kept the other team at bay.
Brown (13-12-5) finished the game 1-4 on the power play, while the Big Green went 2-6 with the extra skater.
Dartmouth (12-12-4) returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. for Game Two of the quarterfinal series. If the Big Green wins, Game Three will be Sunday at 4 p.m.
