HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth baseball team fell to Quinnipiac in a non-conference match-up this afternoon, losing to the Bobcats, 21-10. The visitors were aided by six Big Green errors that led to 10 unearned runs.
Quinnipiac took a quick lead, 4-0, in the first off of five hits. The major damage was done on Randy Gress' three-run homer down the left field line, the first of two three-run blasts for him in the game.
The Big Green answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the first. After Dartmouth loaded the bases with no one out, sophomore Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) hit a rocket up the middle that deflected off the pitcher right to the Bobcat second baseman for an RBI groundout. One out later freshman Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) hit a two-run single up the middle to cut the lead to one, and classmate Kyle Cavanaugh (Wayne, N.J.) scored on a fielding error by the third baseman to knot the game, 4-4.
But Quinnipiac scored six runs in the top of the third, five of which were unearned, to take the lead for good. Once again the major damage was a three-run dinger to left, this time coming off the bat of Kevin MacIlvane.
Dartmouth (10-12) tried to rally in the bottom half of the inning after a two-run dinger by Cavanaugh cut into the deficit, 10-6, but Joe Duffy came in and restored some order, retiring nine of the next 11 Big Green batters.
Gress led Quinnipiac (12-14-1), by going 3-for-7 with two homers, 6 RBI and three runs scored. For the Big Green, Cavanaugh went 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Pagliarulo went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman Andrew Mallory (Langley, B.C.) took the loss for the Big Green, going 2.2 innings and allowing 10 runs, but just five earned. Duffy improved to 1-0 on the year for the Bobcats by throwing five innings and striking out three while allowing just three runs, all earned.
Dartmouth returns to Ivy League play this weekend with a four-game series at Brown beginning Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
