CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- For only the third time in 57 years, the Dartmouth varsity lightweight eight won the Biglin Bowl.
The Big Green defeated Harvard by a two-second margin, leading throughout the entire 2,000 meter race on the Charles River. Dartmouth was clocked in 6:16.1 to the Crimson's 6:18.3.
"It was a great day for all our boats," said Dartmouth coach Steve Perry. "We're excited about the upcoming races, and our focus remains on the Eastern Sprints."
The Big Green took a three-seat lead at the start and built it to as much as eight seats. Harvard made a move in the final 500 meters, but the Big Green was able to answer. Previously, Dartmouth won the Biglin Bowl in 2002 and 1994.
In what Perry called the "gutsiest race of the day," the Dartmouth second varsity barely lost to Harvard by two seconds. The Big Green trailed throughout the race and came back to close the gap at the end.
Dartmouth also won the first freshman and third varsity/second freshman races.
The Big Green is in action on Saturday, April 22, traveling to Rutgers for a regatta with Yale.
